Our new Stop and Shop up here in Mass now has a system where you buy a few reusable grocery bags (89cents each) and bring them with you. You set them up in the cart and as you go through the store, you have a little hand scanner (think like the type of scanner that you brought with you when you registered at Fortunoff or Macy's) and you scan your food items and put them right into your bag. At the end, you plug the scanner into the register and your whole order comes up. Swipe, and be gone!
I LOVE it!!! No more plastic for me:)
Oh I can't wait until we get one of these out here!! That sounds like a GREAT idea

They have been doing that here for a while. I think it is a great idea that they are finally doing it in America. Now they need to start doing it in supermarkets. That's what they do in Germany, except it is 15 (Euro) cents a bag.

Re: Ikea now charges a nickel per plastic bag
I bought reusable bags. Our supermarket gives us a .05 cent credit per bag. I figure by now that they've paid for themselves.
We had SO many of those bags. I recently packed away some glass/porcelain knick-knack things, and I found that the bags made great padding, so I'll keep reusing them for that purpose.

We keep bags in the car--I get a bunch of free tote bags at confenrces, but we always forget to bring them into the store when we are just running in to get a small thing. We're trying to work on that.
Whole foods & some other supermarkets also will take your platic bags back for recycling.
What do you all use for your household trash?
That's where I currently go through way too much plastic.
