"Illegal Alien" Halloween costume considered offensive
Per the message from the United Farm Workers:
An offensive "illegal alien" costume is being sold at Toys R Us and Amazon.com as well as other stores.
According to these websites, for just $39.99, you can now dress up as an "illegal alien" for Halloween. These stores are selling the costume made up of an orange jumpsuit with the words "illegal alien" written across the chest. The costume even comes with a mask of a space invader with big eyes, and a green card.
The email goes on:
The extra terrestrial creature perpetuates racism and discrimination in an already hostile environment and during a period of time when the debate on immigration reform is increasingly hateful and divisive.
Please send an e-mail today to Toys-R-Us and Amazon.com and let these corporations know that this is not funny. They used poor judgement in selling this offensive product and should pull it immediately.

I'm not really sure what to think about this costume. I can see how it can be considered offensive (the green card is a bit much, IMO)
It might be a good idea to pull it because heaven forbid some unstable person should find it offensive and attack the person wearing it or some other reckless tragedy.

I don't think its offensive at all, and I have a few cousins here that are illegal aliens...maybe I'll suggest this be their costume this Halloween

I agree.. I don't even think my cousins whose status may not be so legal would be offended by it at all.

I do not think its offensive. If there was a hat or other object that came with the costume that directly referenced one nationality, then it would be offensive to me.

This is what concerns me too...I do not find the costume offensive though

I don't think it's offensive. It's a halloween costume. Think about how many Michael Jacksons there will be and priests and pregnant nuns. Some people are way too serious.

I like your options - I went with not more offensive than a "sexy" nurse.
I mean really, is ET going to lead a protest against TRU now?
It's right on par with the "cereal" killer costume. A friend of mine did that once... she was a bloodied box of cheerios and she carried a butcher knife.
If THIS was the costume, I could understand the outrage, but it's not.

I dont understand why anyone would be offedned by a Halloween costume. I thought the whole thing about Halloween is dressing up in something you would never be....People need to lighten up already

See, that's why it's racist.... Martians are green. I believe this is a Venusian. Grouping aliens of differing worlds together as a generic "alien" is oppressing their unique individuality, and decreasing their status as distinct alien species....
