I'm going out on disability
I've been having a rough pregnancy due to a ruptured disc in my back. The pain is through the roof and I'm essentially not sleeping at night.
DH and I talked about it at length, and decided that it's in the best interest of the baby and myself (as well as the kids in my class) if I go out on leave until after the baby is born. I'm sure you'd all agree that teaching is just too mentally taxing to take on when you can barely think straight, much less teach someone else.
I'm sad about it. I have a great group of kids this year, and I won an essay contest last year and now have $15,000 worth of technological equipment just for use in MY classroom.
But I guess I gotta do what I gotta do.

Re: I'm going out on disability
You are doing the right thing- the months leading up to my back surgery, I kept teaching (because I am a nut job) and it was the most excruciating 3 months of my life. Every day was a massive effort, and I couldn't even bear to walk to the office to check my mailbox or take my class outside for the last month.
It was pain like I have never felt before, and I pray I will never experience again- and I cannot even IMAGINE what it would have been like pregnant. Really, you have no choice in this....you have to take care of the life inside of you!
Good luck!

Thanks for your reassurance. Part of me feels like a wimp, because by this time of the day (around 4:30) I'm feeling pretty good so long as I haven't been sitting around for too long. But at night, the pain is EXCRUCIATING as is the first 4 or so hours of the day.
I guess in my gut, I feel like I could probably handle it, but want to do the best thing for the baby, you know?

Re: I'm going out on disability
You are absolutely doing the right thing- for you and your baby. I'm so sorry it's been such a rough pregnancy for you, I can only imagine what it must be like with that sort of pain.
I also understand how disappointed you must be, not working as long as you'd hoped. We're teachers, we wouldn't do it if we didn't love it! Don't be hard on yourself, thinking you could've managed. It's definitely not worth taking that chance.
Get as much rest as you can!

So sorry to hear this! but you ARE doing the right thing. NOTHING is more important than your baby and your health. You need to be able to enjoy your pregnancy. Your students will be fine and you'll be that much more energetic and excited when you do return to teaching after the baby!
Take care of yourself!
