I'm losing it! (LONG) (UPDATE 4/3)
I have the worst mommy instincts ever! - Emma had an ear infection and I didn't know it. She didn't pull at her ear - wasn't "sick" - the only symptom was that she was waking up crying so my BTDT mommy sister said that I should have her ears checked out.
She now goes to bed at 8:00pm and wakes once for a midnight bottle - Sleeps till 8:00am.
*************************************
For the past several weeks Emma wakes up 3-4 times a night (she'll be 4 months old on the 28th).
This has been her schedule...
8:30pm - to bed (I get home from work at 7:00pm)
12:30pm - Bottle
1:30am - Wakes up - pick her up and she goes back to sleep
2:30am - Wakes up - pick her up and she goes back to sleep.
3:30am - Bottle
4:30am - I have to get up to go to work! I'm so exhausted that I don't know what to do.
(The 1:30am & 2:30am waking's aren't consistent but happen more often than not. ) I thought all of this was because of teething - She also has eczema - but I'm not so sure.
What am I doing wrong??????

Re: I'm loosing it! (LONG)
Is she crying when she wakes up? Do you immediately go to her?

Re: I'm loosing it! (LONG)
I only go to her when she cries - I ignore all the babbling and groaning.
I try to wait but she gets hysterical so quickly.

Do you let her cry for a few minutes? She may fall back asleep on her own. I know it must be hard since you need your sleep and have to get up so early.

Have you tried the pacifier before picking her up?

Re: I'm loosing it! (LONG)
I have to be honest and say that when she cries I go to her immediately.
Sometimes her cry is so quick and out of nowhere that it scares the hell out of me.

Even to this day, Alex does this. She tends to wake out of habit, so, if on one night she wakes up at 3am, I go to feed her, she sets a habit for herself and continually wakes at 3am, even if she isn't hungry. So, now, I wait about 5 minutes. Sometimes she cries for a minute or two, and it sounds like she's really up, but she falls back asleep on her own within 5 minutes. If she really becomes hysterical, I go to her to feed her.

She's not a big fan of pacifiers and will only take it once ina while.

Looks to me like your little girl has set up a nice little routine for herself! It looks like the 1:30am/2:30am wakings are just habit. I would let her cry for a few minutes. You never know, she may put herself right back to sleep.

Do you think she's old enough to let her CIO a little? There is so much contradictory information out there, that I don't know... I keep reading that 5 months is when you should start trying to CIO.

- It seems that way!
How long do I let her cry?

I don't really think that would qualify as CIO... CIO is a specific method to get your baby to sleep, going in at certain intervals until she falls asleep on her own. I really think this is different. Many babies cry in their sleep or wake up momentarily, cry, and fall back asleep. Alex has done this from day one. If you let her cry for 5 minutes, there's a good chance she may just fall back asleep. If on the other hand, she keeps crying, then it's probably time to go to her, unless you want to start employing the CIO methods... when to start implementing CIO is entirely up to you and your mommy instincts. Some babies NEVER react well to it, hyperventilate and throw up. Other babies respond very well, even at 4 or 5 months. We started at about 5 months and Alex responded really well. I never realized this, but Alex tends to sleep better, and fall asleep better, if she is left alone. If I hold her, cuddle her or rock her, she gets very uncomfortable and squirmy. I used to think it was gas, now I'm realizing it's just that she wanted to be put down in her crib so she could go to sleep!

Thank you for your responses Beth - I appreciate it.
I have a lot to learn about this mommy business. lol!
I'm also beginning to realize that Emma may be better off w/out me interfering with her sleep.

The only thing I've learned is that it's ALL trial and error! I went back to work when Alex was 10 weeks, and after about 2+ months of her waking every 2 hours during the night, and finally being told by my supervising attorney that my work had become "uncharacteristically sloppy" AND having a mini-nervous breakdown the following night as Alex proceeded to wake up every hour, I decided enough was enough. Well, actually, DH decided enough was enough So, the next night I slept in the basement and he let her cry. It took her about 20 minutes to fall asleep. She woke up a couple of times, cried a few minutes and fell back asleep. Now, I can put her in her crib wide awake and she smiles at me and within about 5 minutes falls asleep on her own. Mind you, she still wakes during the night, but now, most nights, it's only once for a bottle, and then either myself or my husband puts her back in teh crib while she's awake, and she falls asleep on her own. But that's just how it worked out for us. We reached our breaking point and it just so happened that Alex responded very, very well to sleep training. It's all a game, and you have to figure out what works best for you, and your daughter! In the meantime, I really would try to let her cry a few minutes before running in to rescue her. She may suprise you!

Re: I'm loosing it! (LONG)
I would give her a few minutes to settle herself, but like other's have said that is not CIO. I never did CIO myself. I found that if Molly needs me for a few minutes and I don't go in at all she gets herself so upset that she can't go back to sleep for a long time. So I learned to get her before she was truly flipping out, but many times if I gave her 1-3 minutes she would just go back to sleep. Can I ask where your husband is in all of this?

Sometimes helping me - Sometimes sleeping. When I leave the house at 5:30am - he is the one taking care of her, and getting her ready for the sitter. I have to admit that he could do more to help at night, but I don't let him, and find myself telling him not to worry, and to go back to sleep. Why I feel the need to be superowman - I have no idea!

Re: I'm losing it! (LONG) (UPDATE 4/3)
OMG...I wonder if my baby is sick!! She goes to bed 7 or 7:30, sometimes fusses for the paci for awhile. She will "wake" for the paci a few times, we put it back, she goes back to sleep.
Eats around 2/2:30 (sometimes earlier, sometimes later) and sleeps till 7 or 7:30am.
She sleeps with her arms above her head and I always think it's the gas that wakes her up
