I'm no longer a working mom....
I got laid off on Friday. I haven't really told anyone because I just didn't want to talk about it. I just told my mother yesterday evening.
I was completely blind-sighted by the whole thing. The main client I was hired to manage has not had any major site redesigns this year, but I was working on smaller projects for 3 other clients. I know nothing is guaranteed, but I thought I would be OK until those projects ended in Nov.
The two partners of the company said it was a tough decision and that they knew for months that they would need to let me go but were hoping to get some new business so that they could support my salary. Rationally I know it made sense to let me go over one of the other 3 project managers since my salary was 2 theirs combined. I had the opportunity to leave last year, but when I told them I had another offer they gave me a raise and let me work from home to get me to stay.
This is my 4th lay off in 6 years. I'm a little bummed because I'm starting to think that I may need to change industries. Not sure what I want to do now. I guess it's a blessing in disguise because now I can focus on the kindergarten search for Nate and find a position that was a little more challenging.
Thanks for reading my rambling....I just needed to get it out.

I'm so sorry for your lay off. I was laid off in November 2008 when I was 8 months pregnant. Like you, I was blindsided. I heard the rumors the day before the lay off and I freaked out when I got home. I had a doctor's appointment the morning they did it. When I got into work, I went to my office to find myself locked out of my computer. Then they called me into the conference room and that when they did it. My boss couldn't even look at me, none the less say anything to me. How I didn't go into labor was beyond me. I really didn't think they would do it especially since I was a high risk pregnancy and I was the only one who knew how to do my job. I was with my company for 12 years. In some respect it was a blessing because I'm home with my DD while I look for work. I still miss my job and my coworkers a lot.

So sorry - I know they say the economy is improving, but I know a lot of people just like you that are still losing their jobs. Hope you find something soon!

as an untenured teacher on li, i feel your pain...i am not a working mom this yr either, but on the bright side, i am haviing tons of fun with my dd's...just the $$ side is hard!
