I'm so mad...NPR but this is where I post the most...(Sorry it's so long)

Ok so early this morning at like 3ish I hear some loud yelling outside in front of my parents house (they live next door to us). At first I thought it was some people arguing and just tried to ignore it. Then I hear my phone ringing and knew it was my mom. She said that there was some guy banging on their door and constantly ringing their bell non stop demanding that they let him in. He was either high or drunk. Not only was he ringing their bell but he was ringing the tennants that live in the upstairs apartment at my parents. My mom does not speak good english, so I called 911 for them....4 FREAKING TIMES! and the tennants upstairs called them 3 times (I found that out today) It was frightening cuz you didn't know what this guy was going to do, especially since he was banging on the door insisting that he be let in. My mom yelled at him from the window to go away but he was like "no I live here, i've been living here for 3 years". Finally for what seemed like an eternity the cops showed up and escorted him to this house across the street so it looks like he's from the neighborhood or maybe he thinks he lives on this block. Anyways he had no keys to get in and the cops were asking for ID on him. I think they ended up taking him because he had no keys or ID on him and it was pouring outside and he was in his boxer shorts and walking barefoot. He was telling the cops that they stole his pants.

I'm just so mad at how long it took the cops to finally show. I didn't expect them to show up 5 seconds after I called but what if God forbid this guy broke down the door and got in....I shudder to think what could have happened...Chat Icon Like I said this guy was either high or drunk there's no telling what he could have done. Then DS woke up at 4:30 from all his screaming, at this point I think the whole neighborhood was awake. Luckily DS went to sleep 20 minutes later.

I feel like complaining to someone about the slow 911 response. I mean what if the call were about someone having a heart attack or something!

Write a letter to your local senator, city councilman and assemblyman. Also send one to the local police department, police headquaters in manhattan and mayor bloomberg.

ALL these people need to know that they need to improve their response time.

Getting the local senator and other officials involved helps tremendously.

Make sure to write "Dear Senator _____" and Cc: to everyone else (local Police, headquarters, mayor)

Then the next letter should say "Dear Assmbelyman ____" and Cc to everyone (local police, headquarters, mayor).

It gets their attention when they think someone else is watching.

Thanks for the idea. I just have no clue who local senator, assemblyman or city councilman is. Is there any way to find. God i'm so clueless sometimes...Chat Icon

A very similar thing happoened to us in Suffolk County! There was a guy at our door banging saying we had ordered a pizza We did not and told him so and he would not leave so we called the police. The dispatcher said-this is not a police matter. Just then the guy yells-I'm a cop undercover. When I told her he was saying he was a cop she was all over itChat Icon Ends up they were trying to serve a warrant for a guy that lived in a house that was on the same property- we lived in a cottage in the back.

I would think response time would also depend on how it was phrased.

Some guy is trying to get into my house versus some drunk guy is banging on my door would probably elicit a very different response.

where you live, do you have your own town police? that could have a lot to do with response time.

i live in an incorporated village and we have our own police department. it literally takes them 2 minutes to respond. (we called them several times when my grandfather couldn't breathe.) they actually got to his house BEFORE we did and we lived in the same town! Chat Icon

I wonder if he is suffering from Alzheimers???? He may have walked out of his house and thought your mothers house was his, KWIM? You said he was in his boxers, no keys or id?

Regardless, sorry it took so long for the police to arrive. It must have been scary for your mother.

That sounds so scary. I'm glad you and your family are ok. It sounds like you all did the right thing by calling the police and staying inside. I wish the cops had arrived quicker for you. Chat Icon

you're welcome. DH and I are very involved in local politics in our area so I know what a few letters/phone calls or emails can do.

I did say that there is no telling what he could do cuz he won't stop banging. He could have tried breaking a window next. I mentioned all scenarios to them and made it very clear we were scared.

It's possible that he could be suffering from Alzheimers but still the way he was shouting was really loud and it was scary. I could hear from next door how loud he was banging on my parents door...I thought he was going to break it down.

Do you know how much time actually elapsed between the first 911 call and when the police showed up?
I'm not saying it was an appropriate response time, but sometimes when you are scared, 5 or 10 minutes can seem like an eternity.

No wait it was an hour and 15 minutes. Still that is not a good response time for 911...
