I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
Obviously I'm tired of being pregnant and I just want to hold my son, but I think I'm kind of chickening out of my induction. I'm really scared and I'm afraid of the added pain from Pitocin. I'm also completely afraid of it being a failed attempt and winding up in a c-section after hours of pain. I just don't know what to do. My induction is scheduled for Thursday AM, with them admitting me Wednesday night. There's a part of me that wants to wait it out, but then I would have to wait until next Thursday for an induction if he doesn't come out on his own. I go to the Dr. this afternoon for them to check the amniotic fluid and make sure he's still ok in there. I know that part of the reason they want to induce is because he's measuring pretty big and I'm not that big of a girl. Any advice from the BTDT moms? I'm open to any and all suggestions at this point.

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
How big is he measuring? My sister went 3 days past her due date and went into labor on her own. She had a pretty big baby -- 8lbs 10 oz with just an epidural and did need an episiotomy after hours of pushing that was all she needed ---- and she is pretty small.
I had a planned c-section because my daughter was 10 lbs --- but I still wish I had gone on my own. I feel like I missed out on an important experience. How past-due will you be on Thursday?
And what have you been doing to bring on labor?
Cleaning? Vacuuming (that worked for my sister)? Walking? Sex? Eggplant parm?????

I was due last Friday, so I'm already 3 days over due; I'll be just shy of a week on Thursday. So if I had to wait until my office's next induction day I would be almost 2 weeks late. Luca is measuring well over 8 pounds, probably closer to 9. The Dr. is concerned that he may not be getting as much from me as he needs and she's also concerned about the possiblity of merconium if I go too long. As far as trying to bring on labor... I've eaten more spicy food in the past week then most people can tolerate, I'm still teaching dance 4 days a week (so I think it's safe to say I'm pretty active), and I've forced, and yes I do mean forced, DH to have sex.

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I was 4 days overdue when I was induced. Personally I loved being able to have a "planned" due date. It was very organized which is totally me I had a really beautiful induction and birth. The Pitocin is a synthetic drug causing your body to have contractions. So be it natural or synthetic your body is going through the process anyway. Alot of women blame induction for the need for a C-section but many of them would have needed it naturally anyway. I understand you questioning yourself, I did the same thing. In the end you have to be happy and not regret your decision. I am happy I chose an induction.........

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
honestly...it was more of just being uncomfortable for me during the pitocin drip. I got out of bed and sat in the glider. DH and SIL were there, so I was occupied. I had a tv in the room, so we watched tv, I read magazines, tried to sleep but couldn't till the epi (and I don't think I napped all that long). Everyone kept asking if I felt the contractions that were every 2 minutes and lasting 70 seconds and I felt them, but it was not painful....just uncomfortable.
When they broke my water....that's when the tears of pain came. I do NOT like pain.
You can do it Nicole...it'll be ok. Bring distractions....magazines, radio w/ music, cards, a journal to write your experience down, a massager for when you are uncomfortable.

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I know its scary but you'll be okay. With my induction - 5 days late - they gave me cervidil. It was an overnight induction and my nurse didnt offer to give me anything for pain, she kept on telling me to breath it out. It was more uncomfortable then painful but I was exhausted and couldnt sleep. Finally at like 5am a different nurse asked if I wanted something to help me sleep. I of course was like yes, why didnt the other nurse give me that hours ago! Around 8am the doctor came in and checked me and I still wasnt dilated past 1cm. He said he could then give me pitocin and then we can wait about 24 hours and see where I am or I could have a c-section. I didnt want to wait around in pain and then at the end possibly need the c so I chose the c then. It was quick and she was big - 9 10 and then they said you wouldnt have been able to have her any other way so I felt like I made the right decision! Good Luck and keep your eye on the prize!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
Whether you are induced, go on your own, or even schedule a c-section - labor and childbirth is no picnic. There will be pain... you know that...so there's really no point in being afraid of the pain or whether it's more or less. You don't know any different because you've got nothing to compare it to.
It all depends on whether or not you are READY to be induced on Thursday. I wanted so badly to go into labor on my own. That was the only reason why I didn't want to be induced. But the Drs scared me into thinking the baby was in danger if I waited much longer. Was he? Maybe, maybe not. Nature WOULD have taken it's course at some point...no one is pregnant forever.
If I was you... I would go in for the induction thursday or if you can, push it off only another day or two... there are risks with being overdue, but trust your instincts.
Here's hoping you go into labor on your own well before Wednesday night!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I also want to stress that induction does not necessarily happen in minutes, mine took 3 long uncomfortable painful days...
Eta my point here is that if I had know the induction was going to take 3 days, I would have waited until the kid wanted to come out on his own. At least I wouldn't have spent all that time in the hospital not sleeping being in pain!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I was induced at 37 weeks due to pre-e symptoms...best experience. To me, it is a controlled environment. I got the pitocin after 12 hours of Cervadil...and within 4 hours I was really feeling the contrax, but an epi later and I was woohoo city. I progressed nice until the pressure, oh the pressure...and after an hour and a half of pushing I welcomed little Bella.
This would have been the same scenario for me if I went into labor on my own I believe. Contrax stink no matter what and epis for me were my savior!
My water didn't break on the train or in a store...and not in my bed and I wasn't in labor on the drive to the hospital...my biggest fears so that I liked avoiding too with my induction...

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
Hi there! I was just telling my dh last week, that next pregnancy I would LOVE to be induced again, I had a wonderful experience. My reasoning is this: I didn't have my water break at 3:00am (that is what I was afraid of - in the middle of the night) and rush to the hospital. I was mentally prepared for it, didn't have a panic attack. another reason was that the pitcon worked SOOO FAST !! It speeds up your contractions which I was afraid of a 13 hour labor. I had a great experience and would do it again in a heartbeat, it eased everything for me. FM if you have any questions!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I know exactly how you are feeling now....I was scheduled for an induction at exactly 41 weeks. It was scheduled for a Wed and Monday afternoon, I decided that I didn't want to do it. I planned to call the Dr. in the morning to cancel the induction and just wait to go on my own. Low and behold, I woke up in labor tuesday morning.
I say do what you think is right for you and Luca.... There is a big possibility that you can go into labor before the induction. I understand the merconium issue bc during labor when they broke my water they found out Nate had his first bowl movement. They had to flush out my uterus with saline. Luckily he didn't breathe anything in.

I AGREE 100%. I found it to be a very controlled experience and I even requested to be induced with my second child!!!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
I had inductions with all 3 and luckily had no problems with any of them. The first one was alittle less to be desired because I had to get 2 doses of cervadil because I was only 37 wks and no even a fingertip dilated but the other 2 were much better.
I liked the fact that my water was broken in the hospital and I didn't have the fear of "would I make it in time". Once I get going, I dilate fast. From 7-10 usually within 20minutes so I always had that fear.
What made the pain bearable.....EPIDURAL!!! It was a peice of cake after that
Good luck to whatever you decide!!

Re: I'm starting to have second thoughts about the induction
i know exactly how you feel and was scheduled for induction too....but wound up in labor the friday before (my induction was for sat!) - try not to stress it, i had a great, easy and quick labor so it was worth the wait - i think she just needed a new "deadline" thats all - it will be worth it no matter what when your son arrives......hang in there! (and if you need to talk with someone who has been there, I am here for you! )
