I'm very sad... need advice/support
I've been trying to get pg with #2. I've started spotting at 8DPO which means that AF is coming. I've had a very short luteal phase since having DD (10DPO). This is my fifth cycle of trying.
I think I may need to wean DD if I want to get pg again. This breaks my heart, because I absolutely LOVE breastfeeding. I'm ovulating just fine, and regularly, but I think the hormones from BFing are what's keeping any implantation from happning.
I feel so selfish for thinking about weaning DD.

honestly i'd talk to your ob first and see if they think that bfing may be the casue before you stop. and if u need it there may be something your dr. can give you. all this said...5 months isn't very long at all, it'll happen.

I spoke with my OB this week about this- she's the one who mentioned the BFing. She didn't tell me to wean, but she did say it was likely the BFing that was keeping my LP short. She wasn't concerned enough to prescribe me anything.
I know that 5 months isn't long to people- but to be 35 soon and wanting at least 2 more, the disappointment is starting to get to be a bitter pill to swallow.

Aww it will happen, maybe this is just a sign that your baby now needs all of you and when the time is right another one will come into your lives. If your healthy you have at least 5 yrs to have more babies. Enjoy the time you and your baby have now..charish the time alone you have with her..

8 months is a LONG time.
Since age is a concern for you, I would wean. Everyone has a different body, some of us get AF right away, others not for years. Some get preggo while BFing, others don't. Go with your gut.

there is nothing selfish about it. EIGHT months. That is a really long time. If you weren't faced with this, you would continue on, but you have to take it day by day and adjust to the situation.

Try taking vitex. It's an herb that's safe to take while breastfeeding that evens out your hormones. I'm still breastfeeding and I was having 10 day luteal phases. I took vitex last month and this month I had a normal 12 day phase.
Here's what Kellymom.com says about it. I would give it a try if you're not ready to wean.
Vitex is a very useful herb for PMS symptoms, as well as for moms who are breastfeeding and are desiring to conceive again, and are having problems with their cycles returning or becoming regular enough to sustain a pregnancy.
Vitex works by stimulating the production of luteinizing hormone (LH) and suppressing the production of follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). This in turn causes the corpus luteum to secrete more progesterone. Progesterone suppresses the production of prolaction. Also, vitex has components that bind to the dopamine receptor sites of the pituitary, inhibiting prolactin secretion.

i didn't realize age was a factor. that of course changes things a lot. you have to do what your gut tells you to do. 5 months of bfing is awesome and these days it is more than most babies get. it is in NO way selfish to stop. you'd be giving your dd a sibling and that is a precious gift too.

Aww, thanks -- but I think I have to credit Kellymom.com. It's so weird though how you happen to be surfing through posts and find a solution, then find someone else in need of the same solution.
Here's some more information from Kellymom on breastfeeding and fertility.

Re: I'm very sad... need advice/support
I know EXACTLY how you feel. I went through so much just to have DS and I love BF. But the doctors let me know that I need to start treatments again if I ever want to think about having a child again. I would have to stop BF. I feel guilty for thinking about it because I feel like I'm choosing a potential second child over DS. But then I think about how long I have BF DS against all odds.
Only you know what you want to do. We can't make the decision for you. Are you definate that you are ovulating? has the doctor actually run tests? I only ask because you never know. I wish you all the luck in the world. If you ever want to vent, just FM me.

Re: I'm very sad... need advice/support
I was so torn when I was told I had to stop BFing to take a prescrption drug unsafe for BFing. I was put against the wall with no choice. DS was on formula for 1 week. Then I went back to BF but decided to keep supplementing with formula.
That may be an alternative for you. At the end, I was only BFing in the morning and evening.
Your body may not be ready yet also.
