Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
Our family has a store bought puppy. My parents decided to buy him, and after he was brought home I did countless hours of research and I vowed that I personally will get a dog in the future from a shelter or RESPONSIBLE breeder. I also informed my parents and heir next dog, if they choose to ever get another one, will be from a shelter. Thnk you to all you ladies who try to educate the rest of us.
Here's Rocky when we brought him home, a yorkiepoo,(When we bought him, the store said he was a cockapoo. They didn't even know what they were selling)

ugh, what did the little one have to go through? Sometimes when my pups are bad and I am so mad (like when Kylie chewed up my new Michael Kors bag ), I would raise my hand trying to scare them, instead of running away or being scared, they flip over for me to pet their tummy or jump up and down licking my hand, all the suddent any anger I have disappeared with their silliness. I can't imagine anybody would want to hurt or abuse these little precious ones

I am not trying to be a jerk and I really don't know the answer to this so maybe you guys can help. I would think that puppies that don't sell in puppy stores (or puppies that breeders can't sell) - do they end up in shelters? What happens to those dogs?
Puppies that don't sell at these shops are either abandoned, brought to shelters or put down.
Over 25% of dogs in shelters are purebreeds. Over 2 million purebred dogs were destroyed last year in shelters. This is what happens to puppies that don't sell.

Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
We got our BullMastiff Meiko from Shake-a-Paw 4 1/2 yrs ago - before I knew what a horrible place they are. A friend of ours later went and bought two BullMastiffs from them (we didn't know in advance) and bother her dogs have hip dysplasia (sp) and other physical abnormalities as well as health problems.
We got lucky with our dog in a sense...she only has a messed up ear: it just doesn't stand the way it should, just kinda droops...an endearing trait for sure, but definitely a sign of poor breeding.
Now that I know better, I warn people about this place too. I was also suckered in by the "breeder representative" claim at the time. I got into it with a woman at work the other day because she was talking about how her sister was breeding maltapoos or cockapoos, or whatever disgusting misbreed she was breeding and was going around offering people puppies.

Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
I had bought my dachshund from a mall pet store long before I had any clue about pet stores and puppy mills. She had so many problems when she was younger and now she has a lot of mental issues. I feel guilty for contributing to puppy mills and wish I had just adopted instead. I'm certainly not saying I don't love her, but I do wish I had been more informed before buying her.

Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
I think the average person who wants to buy a dog does not realize how horrible these puppy mill stores are. When I started researching for our pups, I was horrified by what I saw out there regarding puppy mills, etc. It is really scary to think about what these poor babies go through. Every time I pass a pet store, my heart aches for the poor babies inside

Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
I am a firm believer in adopting from shelters. There are just so many dogs out there who are just waiting for a home. We don't have the room right now for a dog -- we'd want it to have tons more space -- but when we do have the room and decide that it's time to get a dog we'll definately go to a shelter.

Re: Important re: SHAKE A PAW
It infuriates me to see the stories on puppy mills and to hear someone say that they got their pup from a store!!!!
You wouldn't buy a baby at a store, so do your homework and put a little effort into it....

In my earlier years before I knew better I managed a pet store, I thought i was helping them...anyway I know better now. But to answer this question. Our store had a schedule for marking the price of the pups down. after 2 weeks, they dropped like half price, after 4 weeks they went down to 199. Then shortly after that we would just place them in loving homes as long as the customer bought supplies for the dog, like a crate, collar , leash, food. It was not so much to make a sale of these items (since we also gave a substantial discount on them) but because we wanted this dog to get a good start to life. I also tried to make sure by that age the dog had begun to housebreak. WE would take some home on weekends, and take them for walks during the day whever possible. We also, kept the dogs on a good rotating schedule, they were never in their cages for long. However, this store limited how many pups we had each week, The company made a LOT of good changes over the years...now they do not carry dogs at all..YAY!!!!!!! Just supplies (best move they ever made), and advocate adopting dogs instead!!!!
Also, these dogs were WELL taken care of. There were strict guidlines in order for them to be sold. If they did not meet these guidlines we placed them, mostly to our staff, and friends and family members. However, as well run as this facility was........I wish pet stores with animals would just GO AWAY...i wish people would do the research, and STOP buying from them!
