That is why I NEVER pay up until the job is completed. It gives them more of an incentive to get the job done right.Chat Icon

That stinks Kathleen... I would let them know you are unhappy.

When you're having work done, are you there watching them? If not next time i'd try to be there and make sure they are doing the job right.

This is basically why DH is doing all the work himself... I know sometimes it may not be not possible though.

Sorry Kathleen, this is why DH did 99% of the work himself (w/ my dad).

I'd be sure you or Tim was there to watch them & if you see something you don't like, tell them.

Sorry you feel this way.

Ugh Kathleen, sorry you feel that way. Chat Icon Chat Icon

We try to do everything we can by ourselves for this very reason. If we need to hire someone we make sure at least one of us is home and we're on top of them the whole time. It might be annoying, but it's our house and we have to live with it.

This has happened with every single thing we have had done. We couldn't do the walls or the floors ourselves but from now on we are going to try our hardest to do things

Re: In general when having work done on your house do you feel...

Oh I feel your pain. We hired a General Contractor for all the work we had done to the house prior to moving in. We had some new hardwood floors put in, a new roof, redid some hardwood flooring, whole new kitchen & a gas conversion. I'm still Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon !!! Chat Icon We couldn't be there for all that work. It took them 3 months to complete everything.Chat Icon Believe me things happened that we were happy with at all. We complained and they tried to fix things the best they could. We still find things we don't like about their work. There are some things you just can't change sometimes. I couldn't argue anymore with the contractor. We waited until everything was done and then we gave them the rest of the money, but that really didn't seem to make them work any faster or better. Chat Icon They were dragging their feet for some reason. And this was a recommendation from a friend. Well never again. Now we have done any of the other work on the house. But if we do it will be small jobs and we will be right there this time watching over them. I know it's not easy to always be there, believe me it killed us to have them in our house for 3 months without us living there. Chat Icon I have just chalked all of this up to a "live and learn" experience at this point otherwise I would get too mad about the whole situation. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

i hear ya!! this is why my DH insists on doing everything himself Chat Icon its nice that he has the ability to do it, and do it the way he/we want it done... BUT its frustrating that sometimes things (understandably) take him awhile to do.. when we could pay somebody and have it done so much quicker!! but, i guess in the long run its better to be totally satisfied.
i would let them know that you weren't happy... you are the one paying them, they need to make sure you're happy...

Re: In general when having work done on your house do you feel...

I did everything inside my house except the master bath. The contactor was the neighbor of a friend and he screwed up my recessed lighting, he cut the holes the same side as the reflector trim. I had to take all of the reflectors trim pieces down and re mud the space between the light and where he cut the drywall.
This would have not cut it if I was home, but Wifey didn't know so she paid him.......

You live and you learn.... I only pay for what I feel is simple field labor, that I don't want to bust my hump to do and jobs that I do not have the equipment to do.......

DH is a contractor, so he does all our work. He would never let anyone else work on our house, he's a perfectionist.
