Re: IN Home Daycare
Do you mean bringing your child to someone else's house or having someone come to your home?
I have someone come to my home and it's more expensive then a daycare center or bringing my child somewhere.

Re: IN Home Daycare
We use a homebased daycare for Nate. It was referred to us by a family friend. We visited a few places and it was important to us that it was run like a real day care center with some type of daily schedule/routine.
The thing I liked most was that the kids are NOT in her living space. Her basement is completely converted with it's own entrance from the outside. I went to one place and the 3 kids were napping on the owner's bed, which was not acceptable to me.
Not that this helps you much, but we pay $150/week. They provide breakfast, lunch, and snack. We just bring diapers every week.

See, for me the leads I was getting it was MUCH cheaper then a daycare....
I am wondering how to find one though that I can trust if not through a friend( which is not how I am getting any leads)

Re: IN Home Daycare
You need to do a lot of research into the person running it too. In a center all employees go thru a backround check. At a home setting they don't. Craigs List and the Penny Saver always have some listed. Not all are cheaper though. And if they do not claim the income you cannot use the $5K tax deducation or any childcare credits on your taxes. Also, if the care giver is sick who is their backup? When does she take vacations? If she has her own children what happens if they get sick? Is she CRP and first aid trained? Does she have insurance? Is she licensed by Suffolk County to run a daycare center?

Home-based day cares are usually a little cheaper than full day care centers. I know in Chicago, the centers we were looking at were running anywhere from $240-400/week. They all had ridiculous waiting lists, which is why we opted for a home-based day care.
In IL, all home-based centers have to be registered with the city and state. We have a service that will provide parents with centers that are registered in their area. If there are any complains or violations then it will be on record (kinda like a BBB). I would imagine that NY state or Nassau/Suffolk counties has something similar.
The questions that Michele posted are definitely good ones.
Good luck! The search is definitely a hard one. Don't rush into anything, but at the same time go with your gut. Visit a place 2 or 3 times if you need to (different times of day even to see how they handle the kids).

Re: IN Home Daycare
We did/do.
My Dad and his wife watch children in their home. So it's family but it's also like home based daycare. There are 4 - 5 other children there with Jake. We do pay, but not the going rate.
We also looked into others doing this type of daycare. In most cases yes, it was less expensive than a daycare center. Initially we were going to go with our neighbor who does this and she wanted $1000/month. In my research I found that the going rate was approximately $50/day.
It has worked out, but now we feel it's time for Jake to be in more structured type of daycare so we are in the process of doing that.
As for a referral, I would start with referrals you get from the Child Care Council. That link is for Nassau this one is for Suffolk.

Go to the Child Council of Suffolk or Nassau. They have a website and will refer you for free to a licensed in home daycare.

Licensed in home daycare providers are screened - As well as anyone who works with them. They can also use their SS# or business id # for families to write off child care expenses.
If you use an unlicensed daycare provider they can put 2 families under their SS# for tax purposes. As for background checks - They probably don't do them..
