In the US - how many sonos after 20 weeks?

So far I've had an 8 week one - which they don't normally do here, but I had it because I miscarried my last pregnancy - and the 12 week. But after that we only have a 20 week unless there's a compelling reason to have additional ones.

How many are standard in the US? just curious! Chat Icon

I didn't have any after the Level II except last week at my 35 week appt because I was contracting and they wanted to see how she was doing.

Otherwise I think if everything is going ok, there are no more after the Level II.

That's pretty standard. Most OBs don't do another one after 20 wks unless there is a medical reason. Some do growth sonos around 35 weeks to estimate the baby's size, but it's not required.

I thought it was standard to have a growth sono in the third trimester. I have mine scheduled at 32 weeks. If the baby is measuring big or small, then you get more to monitor the size of the baby.

My last was at 18 weeks (level II) she said unless there was a medical concern I would get no further ones. Unless I wanted the 3d/4d one. Which we did not get.

Re: In the US - how many sonos after 20 weeks?

I am 22 weeks and I have had 3 so far this pregnancy. I have one more at 30 weeks (growth sono). Four is standard at my OB practice.

With DD, I had food poisoning at 36 weeks and was having contractions....so between 36 weeks and when I had DD (37w) I had a few extras to check fluid levels, etc.

ETA: Usually there are 3 total for a pregnancy at my Ob's office.....but I had an early sono for both to determine EDD b/c my cycles are long.

Depends on the Dr, but some will also do a 32 week growth sono. I did not have one with G, because he was so little, but with this baby I am having 2 sonos, because he is friggin gignormous!

I think that is pretty standard - a lot of how many you get really depends on the OBs some like to really run up the sono bills and will do them at multiple visits without indication (I'm talking about a non complicated pregnancies without medical reasons). But in non complicated pregnancy the 12 week and the level II are the most common - then depending on the OB some do one at 8 weeks, and a growth sono - others only do those if there is a medical reason (need to date the pregnancy or possible complications or large baby).
