Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I agree with the OP. The fact of the matter is, when your facebook "friend" has time to find out and share with the world her New Jersey name or which smurf she'd be but no time to pick up a phone and have a substantive exchange with you, she's probably not really your friend.
Texting is acceptbale in certain contexts, but you can't rationalize a relationship reduced to only texting and facebook. You just can't.

I hate the phone!
I think texting, FB, and email are 100% fine! Makes it easier if I need to contact a few people at once with the same message as well.

I swear...I think DH & I are the only one's who do not text. Don't have it...no interest in having it.
ETS: I agree with. Pick up a phone. We've been doing for how many years. It's not that bad.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I HATE texting.
Call me. Call me. Call me.
To ME - texting is not a suitable form of communication. I loathe texting and texters. Ugh.
eta: I'm not a small talker but I know people who are - I generally avoid their phone calls and will return their call when I am less busy.
I STILL HATE TEXTING.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I totally agree with everything that you said. I feel the SAME way. I was just talking about this with someone this morning actually. Yes, It does make it too easy to not reach out and pick up the phone. I question who is real and who is not these days, as far as friends go...

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I think it totally depends on the circumstances...a quick question, a quick invite - I'd probably prefer email / text / FB message...
But if you want to "catch up" and it's been forever since we've talked...don't expect texts...my carpal tunnel doesn't allow for lengthy responses!!
But DH and I communicate constantly through the day on BBM...

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I text a lot and I find it to be useful in some situations. However, my DH was completely offended when his brother's engagement announcement came by text message and then an invite to the engagement party came the same way. For your only brother, a phone call is a lot more appropriate.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
It can be a suitable solution--depends on the situation.
I want to know if my friend is taking spin class with me tonite--text.
I want to know how my friend's mom who had surgery is doing--call.
There are lots of things that texts can cover...
But many things IMO require a call.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I hate texting and think I've done it 2 or 3 times. I am not fast at it, it's much quicker for me to call. Also, I don't have unlimited texting and would be annoyed if I have to pay for texts received. I

I think it's an acceptable form of communication. I don't think it should replace phone calls all together but I don't think there's anything wrong with it. I find cell phones intrusive because of the 24/7 access. At least with a text I can get back to the person when it's more convenient.
I agree.
This is probably a separate topic but I find it more annoying when people try calling me at home, realize I am out when I dont answer and then instead of leaving a message, call my on my cell for something not important/urgent. If I am out, I am DOING something and its not the time to "catch up" and I'm definitely not one to talk on my cell in other people's company unless its urgent. But I also despise the phone, especially small talk, so that might be why I'd rather communicate via text 80-90% of the time.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
I like texting because I can tell someone something, and they can read it at their leisure, and call me if they want to but there's no pressure to.
For things like birthdays I prefer calling and receiving calls. But for relaying information, like "I'll be home at 6", I think texting is fine.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
It's not that I hate texting, I just don't use my personal cell phone that much. Chances are if you text me, I probably won't get it in the time frame you want me to. I don't even give out my cell # to most people.
I do like communicating by email best. I do like talking on the phone to many people, but I find with certain close friends, there is no way the conversation is ever less than an hour long. I email in between those conversations, when all I have time for is a quick update.

Re: In your opinion, is TEXTING a suitable substitute for calling?
It depends. If it's for a quick question or comment....then sure. But I hate when people want to know everything that is going on in your life. If you don't want to call me, then send me an email. But I don't do long text messages. it's annoying.
