incentives at-home regarding school

does anyone 'do' anything for their children for when they do their HW or do a good job on their HW? I want to do some sort of incentive chart or incentive with my new kindergartner to keep them motivated.

ie. sticker every day for five days = ice cream on Friday???

every HW assignment you do you get an m&m, etc?

looking for ideas...

Honestly, no.

That is their SOLE job while living under my roof. It is just expected of them, and not bc they are rewarded for it.

I agree. I never rewarded in the way you described for hw. I take them for ice cream on report card day and praise them when they get good test scores or grades. If hw isn't done they can't have screen time or something else they want that day like dessert.

Also praise them for their effort. Hopefully the teachers do the same.

I rewarded/bribed for sitting on the potty though! And older DD gets a small allowance for a couple of chores.

Hopefully, A lot of incentive will be intrinsic too. They will and should feel good about what they are doing but that comes in time.

I agree.

I want my DD to understand that HW is a responsibility that comes along with growing up and going to school. It has to be completed because that's what is expected in order to learn and do well and not because I'm giving her a special treat.

I'll gladly reward her for a great report card or some other special achievement but HW and school is her job, I'm not giving her anything special for doing that.

ETA - Also, speaking as former elementary teacher, I wouldn't get in the habit of rewarding for HW because in doing so, you're giving your LO an out, you're giving him the choice to not do it.. Let's say he doesn't care about the sticker or M&M one day, he'd rather give that up then do the HW. Then what??? No HW that night? I wouldn't open up the option of NOT doing HW. Doing the HW should be non-negotiable and should be expected of him every night no matter what.

Just make sitting down and doing his HW part of your school day routine and reinforce the idea that it's an important part of his learning and his responsibility as a big boy in Kindergarten.

I agree with the other ladies.

DS is only in K and has not had homework yet, but he knows already we will be asking about it tonight at Meet the Teacher.

What we've been doing with him too is setting limits, like no IPad or computer during the week, and if he is good and cooperative around his school stuff, then he can be rewarded on the weekends.

In Pre K if he gave me a hard time I also wrote a note to the teacher that he wouldn't do it so he would get a little embarrassed.

Only happened like once.....Chat Icon

THANK YOU! I am an elementary school teacher and I tell the kids all the time that it is their responsibility to do their homework. I don't give them a ton, but they do have it each night and are expected to complete it.

I would not recommend incentives as it sets up a bad precedent that is hard to break. It should be you do your work, then you can play/eat dinner/have time to relax, spend with family...

It puts accomplishing your work first and then your reward is having the rest of the night to do what you choose since the HW is out of the way!

Homework is expected to be done and your job as a member of the family. I don't give rewards for doing homework. If he report card is excellent then they may get a treat.

Re: incentives at-home regarding school

I used to have a responsibility chart with about 7 things DS needed to do, and one of them was, sometimes, doing homework. But DS knew that hw was something that he needed to do, and didn't need a reward for it.
