INDOMETHACIN and preterm labor?

Hi ladies,

My doctor put me on this medicine for the next three days. Has anyone heard of it before? It's supposed to slow down the contractions but I read about side effects online and it says to not be on it more than 3 days, ideally two days is the most to be on it because it can cause health problems with the babies hearts. I took the first dose and am very nauseous from it. Has anyone had experience with this medicine before?

Re: INDOMETHACIN and preterm labor?

I took it in my pregnancy with my DS at 22 weeks. I forget if it was from that or the procardia, but one of them gave me a TERRIBLE migraine headache for like 24 hours. It was awful. It did stop though.. and that may have also been from the procardia. Most importantly, the combo of both meds stopped the preterm labor issues I was having and my DS was born at 39 weeks.

Wanted to add, I remember they said it COULD impact baby's heart so I had to go back and have a very detailed sono of my DS's heart while I was on it. No issue was ever found though.

Thank you for your response. Yes I am nervous about being on it too long. I know the doctor only said 3 days but that's when the problems can arise. Thank you for sharing your experience with it. I'm feeling very sick from it headache and nauseous. Seems similar to what you had.

Re: INDOMETHACIN and preterm labor?

Chat Icon It's tough because when you're in pain or feel sick, you just want it to go away right then and there.. and there's so much unknown. WHEN will it stop?! WILL it stop?? Is this just how I'm going to feel from now on???

Not to mention, pregnancy is a particularly vulnerable time and particularly frustrating that there's not much you can take for those side effects.

I know it's easy for me to say not currently being in the situation, but try and just sleep when you can... sleep it off, stay hydrated, and just surround yourself with positivity as much as you can. Hopefully those symptoms will be short lived like it was for me- though I know at the time, an hour feels like a day, and a day feels like a year.

Pennycat thank you for your advice! I'm hoping this is short lived as well. There is really nothing I can do about the side affects which suck. I'm trying to get in touch with my doctor about it. Maybe I can take it twice a day instead of three times a day...

I wasn't put on that drug, I was given Magnesium sulfate to try to stop my preterm labor at 32 weeks. The side effects were awful. I got a bad headache too. Are you in the hospital or home? Are you dialating? I feel so sad you are going through this now. You rest, take care of yourself and your babies. Praying they settle down and stay put for now.

Thank you hun. Right now I'm on bed rest at home. I go back to the doctor on Friday so I'm hoping I will know more then. This has been such a long difficult pregnancy. Thank you for your prayers hun Chat Icon
