Infant being sick alot & vaccines (sorry so long)

Derek is behind on vaccines and I am starting to get nervous. So far he has only had 1 DTaP and 1 Hib vaccine. I like to split vaccines...I did the same with TJ. He got one a month. He was never really behind because most peds give shots at 2, 4, 6 and 12 mo. But TJ was getting a shot every month. So he was keeping up.

Anyway, Derek was supposed to get his first vaccine at his 2 mo. appt. He developed a fever that day and ended up in the hospital. The ped. wanted me to wait until his 3 mo. appt. to start vaccines to give him immune system a chance to build up. At 3 mo. he got the DTaP vaccine. At his 4 mo. appt he was sick...ear infection. Once we got over that I waited a week after finishing antibiotics and he got the Hib vaccine. Now again at his 5 mo. check-up he was supposed to get a vaccine and has another ear infection Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

If your child is sick, how long do you usually wait until giving them a vaccine? Did anyone else have a infant that was sick alot and was stuck in this position?

I know sometimes the antibiotics can wear down their immune system which is why I want to wait a week or 2 after finishing them to vaccinate but I feel like he really needs to catch-up. My ped. told me I have to start doubling up so he can catch up.

It is so frustrating. Being I was home with TJ the first year he hardly ever got sick. The ped. told me as soon as TJ started nursery school to be prepared for him to get sick a lot b/c he was not a daycare kid and was not exposed to alot of germs. Everything he is bringing home he is passing on to Derek

Thanks Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon I know you are going through alot too.

I know he will most likely end up with tubes in his ears because every time he gets a stuffy nose he gets an ear infection. I just hate him being sick this often. I am starting to worry something else is wrong. My ped. promises me this is normal for 2nd children because they pick up all the germs from the older siblings from nursery school and playgroups.

I don't have any advice about the vaccines, but I can really sympathize with your worry. My older DS caught exactly ONE cold (from me) his whole first year of life. Now he's in nursery school and of course he brings home all sorts of colds and coughs, and my poor little 12 month old DD... she's been sick at least six times during her first year, every single illness was from big bro Chat Icon In fact I just took her to the ped this morning for a wet cough... they heard wheezing and now she's on albuterol Chat Icon

I do think it's normal though, and not a sign that anything is wrong. When you think about it, 2nd children are exposed to soooooo many germs from the older sibling, and it's not like the older sibling is old enough to be super-careful about hand-washing, covering their mouth consistently when coughing/sneezing, etc... so it's really easy for the germs to spread. My older DS, for example, has a habit of leaving dirty tissues around Chat Icon and of course the minute I turn my back little DD walks over and picks it up! Next thing you know she's sick.

Thanks for sharing! My older DS had 1 cold which led to an ear infection and that was it too until he was over 12 mo. I guess that's what I am comparing it to.

My older son loves wiping his nose with his arm and gets snot all over his shirt Chat Icon and than goes and plays with the baby or his toys Chat Icon Chat Icon I think I disinfect the toys daily. I even wipe down his books and spray lysol everywhere.

I'd just double and triple up. Personally for my kids I have no problems giving them vaccines when they are sick with a cold. With a fever, I'm +/- not because I'm worried about harm but just because it can confound figuring out if they have a fever from their vaccines or the illness.

As far as kids getting sick, between me being a peds ICU doc AND my son in daycare they are in a crossfire of mutant ICU germs and daycare snottiness. Both my kids have had colds pretty much the whole winter. Amazingly my son (almost 2) has only had 2 courses of antibiotics his whole life. I attribute that to me not brining him in unless I think he needs antibiotics and having a pediatrician who will only treat when medically appropriate.

Sorry if that's not what you want to hear.
