Info on cord blood donating
I have been doing some online searches and am going to ask my doctor about it, but I was wondering if anyone went this route.

If you do a search you will find tons of info. Also, go onto the company's websites and sign up for the free info packets, to me, that's the best way to compare.

Re: Info on cord blood donating
We've talked about it quite a bit on here in the past month or so. You should be able to find our posts. I plan to do it but I am having trouble deciding which company. I am leaning towards ViaCord but I do have some concerns about them.

Re: Info on cord blood donating
What I was actually referring to was not cord blood banking, but cord blood donating. I had heard (and read online) that you can donate your baby's cord blood to a public blood bank instead of doing private banking. From what I've read this does not cost anything. I was just wondering if anyone had done this. DH and I are having difficulty finding the funds for private banking and thought this was at least a way for us to maybe help others.

Sorry, I read your post way too quickly. My fault! I think that the starting point would be to ask your doctor about it. I believe that the ability to do this depends, somewhat, on the policies of the hospital where you give birth and what public blood banks they are associated with. Also, the doctor's office usually charges a fee to collect the cord blood (mine charges $250). You will want to make sure that the fee is waived if you are donating the cord blood. I had heard that many of the public cord blood banks are not accepting new donations. My doctor said that is not true, though. I am still keeping this idea in mind as I have not committed to privately banking just yet.
I also noticed that some of the companies I got literature from talked a little bit about receiving donations of cord blood in order to help their research. The literature is not for that purpose, but you may want to call the private companies. I would hope that they can at least give some useful information to someone who wants to donate.
