Insect repellent?

DS is 5 months old. I'm meeting a few friends at a park this weekend and we're going to walk on some heavily wooded trails. I'd like to pick up some insect repellent before we go just in case there are a lot of bugs.

Is it safe to use insect repellent on a 5 month old? I know sunscreen should be used before 6 months, but I wasn't sure about bug spray. Are there any specific ones that you recommend?

Re: Insect repellent?

I would try the bug bands, you just put them on your ankle and it repels the bugs without anything on your skin. you can even put it on your child over thier clothing.

oh no..... I personally wouldn't even put insect repellent on myself.

Why not get one of those stroller nets and put it over your baby....

You wouldn't even use any of the natural/organic DEET-free ones?

Re: Insect repellent?

I wouldn't put it on that young of a baby either, personally. Even an organic/all-natural one. DD is almost 2 and has never worn it (and I never wear it either).

I did buy the California Baby organic one to have on hand, just in case. My mom lives up in the mountains upstate and it is BUGGY up there, and we plan on visiting her.

not likely... depends upon what that cosmetic website says about it. A lot of seemingly natural/organic products actually don't fare well once analyzed by them.... often becuase of 'fragrance'.... and fragrances are usually what non-DEET insect repelents rely on to deter insects... I would be surprised if there is an inoccuous insect repelent that actually works.

that website was a real eye-opener.

(I actually think my stroller netting idea is pretty crafty... and likely will work w/o any chemicals Chat Icon After all, a 5 mo old won't exactly move around a lot. I'm presuming you'll keep DC in a sling or some sort of carrier, or a stroller most of the time)

Thanks for the explanation. Chat Icon I'd be using a jogging stroller on the trails.
