Installing a bathroom from scratch?
What is more expensive?
1-Labor
or
2-Materials
Any thoughts on bathroom construction or things to make sure of?
TIA!

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
Our materials were a almost as much as labor - about $1k less than labor.
Materials included: - subway tile for shower/tub area - accent tile for " " - hexagon tile for floor - Kohler 30" pedestal sink - Kohler fixtures (sink & shower/tub) - Kohler tub - Toto toilet - 2 light fixtures from Home Depot Expo - medicine cabinet from Pottery Barn - towel holder & hooks from PB - greenboard for the shower & ceiling - sheetrock for remaining walls - trim and other miscellaneous wood (for cutout)
We bought the sink, tub, toilet & fixtures from Blackman plumbing.
Bathroom came to about $11,500.

Thanks for such a detailed response! That quote is higher than we are willing to spend. We are hoping to save a significant amount with the labor costs. Was this bathroom a 1/2 bath?? and was it installed in the basement as well?

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
Depending upon what materials you use and if you want a half or a full bath, it can go either way.
If you are installing a bathroom in a basement (from scratch) you will have to run the waste pipe and additional plumbing. Plumbing is almost always the most expensive part of installing a bath from scratch. The location is important. The most logical, and inexpensive placement is right near the waste pipe you have that comes down from the first floor. To move it to another area can cost a few thousand just to have them extend the waste pipe. It will also but into the height of your ceiling aznd will have to be boxed in because it will hang lower than a suspended ceiling... just not worth it.
You can definitely save on materials. If you plan on only doing a half bath, I'd forego tile on the walls. It's extra $$$ and extra labor... it's cheaper to paint yourself. It's also a lot easier to change the look of the bathroom down the line, just $35 dollars for a gallon of new paint. With tile you are "married" to the look and it's not easily or cheaply changed. You can also get a stock vanity and medicine chest from Home Depot or one on closeout.
I would not skimp on plumbing fixtures though. You don't want to go cheap here. You want the internal components to be copper, it lasts much longer. Unfortunately, with the world economy (demand from China) the price of copper has tripled in the last year. And you want a good toilet because a basement toilet basically has to defy gravity to get the waste out into the cesspool or sewer.
As far as electrical, if it's a half bath, you will need a light above the vanity, maybe an additional light in the ceiling, and probably only one outlet.
A new bathroom will add about $7K (estimate/depending upon materials) to the job at the low end.
HTH
BTW: A half bath is just toilet and sink 3/4 bath is toilet, sink and shower stall full bath is toilet, sink and tub.

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
It's a full bath - standard 7x7 - 1st level of the home.
The labor was originally $6500 but wound up being around $7100. Writing that out now, the price I gave you was wrong...the bathroom came out to be more than what I seem to be remembering LOL...

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
The most expensive part is the water pump (toilet and bath) it will run you between $5000 - $6500 depending how deep and complicated....
The rest will be labor and materials..I would say at least $10000 for a simple design....

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
I definitely don't plan on putting tiles up nor do I plan on spending much on fixtures. I plan on going to Lowes, Home Depot, etc. I have to find out about the plumbing. I think I remember the sellers saying it's in a prime place off the laundry room for a bath there.
I never knew of a 3/4 bath.
You girls are soo helpful!

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
Our materials from Home Depot costs about 3,000.
The labor was about 8,000. Bathrooms are very expensive to renovate.

I am figuring 2-4K after speaking to my friend's brother, including materials and labor. The other quotes I got were double that for the labor!!!

Re: Installing a bathroom from scratch?
We redid our bathroom last summer and after spending 40K on redoing other parts of the house, I didnt want to spend $$$ on materials. I got expensive tiling for the kitchen floor and backsplash and I knew it wasn't in the budget for the bathroom. We got almost all our materials from Home Depot and I'm very happy with how it came out. (I wish I got a smaller vanity but that's beside the point here) Our entire bathroom came out to about $6500.

that is REALLY low...is he a handy guy or a licensed contractor? The sewer ejector pump is between $300-600, plus you've got to do all the plumbing to hook it up. Any decent toilet is $200 a sink about $200 if you're doing a shower/tub thats at least $300 & I'm not including faucets in these prices. You can't go cheap on plumbing fixtures in a basement, a bad fitting could fill your basement with water in a couple of hours & basement bathrooms done w/o permits that flood are RARELY covered by homeowners ins. We still didn't factor in green board which is now $13 a sheet, tile, lumber, misc materials & your friends brother will need to earn at least three days pay. The quote you got doesn't jive to me at all.

We're not really paying for the labor. It's more of a favor than anything. He's worked on a lot of houses of our friends. So that quote is definitely possible without any labor costs and fancy fixtures, provided we don't need extensive plumbing work done. I just wanted to get an idea of how much materials were versus labor.
Thanks for all your input ladies

This is a renovation, right
If you are installing a new bathroom from scratch i.e., putting in walls, electrical & plumbing etc. for this price PLEASE FM the name of who you are using
The best bathroom renovation estimate we got is about $2K in labor (maybe a little less) for demo and removal of all debris; installing wonder board for shower area & floor; installing sheetrock, spackling, tape, prime, skim coat and painting bathroom (7 x 5); tiling the floor & shower; installing a shower rod and installing built in shelves in shower.
We will need to supply all materials.

His quote would definitely not be that low for anyone else. He's a family friend, hence the reason it's so cheap.
Thanks for all the info!
