I would love to see a judge or jury award a "BONUS" to the VERY people responsible for the mess the company is in.
What a judge or jury should ethically do, and what they are required LEGALLY to do are two different scenarios.
If I was on the jury, i'd award them their bonuses if they were contractually obligated to receive them.
True - but if the contracts were drawn under a pretense of fraud, then they can be voided, legally.

1. I'm not sure why everyone is saying that the bonuses are OK just because they were "contractual" and that contracts must be honored. Since when are all contracts honored? Contracts are breached every single day in both the corporate world and in the average person's everyday life. Yeah, so the people who don't get the bonuses can sue AIG, okay. If the money isn't there or was used for other things (i.e., trying to build up the company again so it does not continue to fail) then you can't get blood from a stone.
2. Do not for a moment think that the government did not know that some of the bailout money was going to go towards paying these bonuses. The average American is being totally scammed right now into thinking that our lovely friends in Washington are "outraged" by these bonuses and that they want to find a way to stop them from being paid. Total BS. They knew exactly where the bailout money was going to go, they approved plans to put it there, and the only reason they are lying about it now is because the media found out and exposed it and the public outcry was so great that they had to do damage control.
3. "AIG CAN'T FAIL" - I am so tired of hearing this, yes, I understand that they have their hands in everything (another huge problem altogether) but the question is, how long do we throw good money after bad? How long do we keep giving them billions? How much money can Washington print, and how raped are Americans going to get in taxes? Everyone is so appalled at how much money was spent on Iraq...billions and billions...and everyone ******* and moans about that, when the main purpose of that was to bring freedom to people and to keep American safe. But some of these same people seem to have no problem in giving billions to rich bankers and executives because it's "contractual." I guess I am too ignorant to understand it.

Re: Insurance giant AIG to pay $165 million in bonuses
What is so aggravating to me, seeing it from the Insurance underwriter standpoint, is that there are some really good ethical Insurance Companies out there, and by the government bailing AIG out month after month, it is essentially competing with other Insurance Companies...Companies who do things in hard times to make money & write policies, legally and ethically.
AIG is a disgrace!

I agree, let them be sued...I really don't understand how they let them write these kinds of contracts in the first place......so many of the laws in this country are effed up....
