insurance question

Since I am considering moving onto an RE, I was wondering about different insurance plans. Right now I have vytra and it does not cover much when it comes to infertility. I have some other options, though. I was just wondering about what insurance companies you girls have found to be good when it comes to coverage for injectables and even IVF.

anyone have Empire-United Healthcare, or Aetna?

Thanks!
Alison

Re: insurance question

i have ghi, which has been pretty good. i don't know much about other insurance plans, but i would try to find the doctor first and see what insurance plans they take and then sign up for one. it would kinda stink to find a doctor you love and then find out he/she doesn't take your insurance.

as far as the injectables, i have express scripts which is something seperate from ghi, because i work for the nycdoe and prescription coverage is through my union. i'm not sure if that makes a difference, but all i had to pay was copays, which added up to about $500. imagine what it would have been without insurance??? insane!

good luck!!!

Re: insurance question

I have Aetna PPO. It gives me $20,000 lifetime of infertility benefits.

Re: insurance question

I think it all depends on if your company picks up the infertility rider or not.

I had coverage with Oxford. Now I have Aetna PPO and I have none.

Re: insurance question

ITs the company you work for, not the insurancecompany who determines the benefits.

Re: insurance question

I had no idea that it is your employer who determines this. Thanks so much for the info. I will have to make some more phone calls!

Re: insurance question

Also, you need to ask when your open enrollment is. Most companies only allow you to switch plans once per year. You should be able to get a full chart of all the plans offered and have someone to call to ask specific questions.

Re: insurance question

I have Oxford which covers unlimited meds/iui's, but only one IVF cycle and no freezing of embryos. If this cycle hadn't worked I would have had to wait until open enrollment to change insurance companies to continue infertility treatments, well IVF anyway.

Re: insurance question

I have Empire...United Heathcare, and they have covered EVERTHING. I think they are one of the best when covering infertility.

the thing is its Not the insurance who covers it. It means your own employer bought whats called a rider and added that amount of coverage to the benefits offered to you.

How it works is Insurance covers only limited things...No NY insurance carriers cover IVF. There is a NYS mandate that says all employers and insurers must make testing and IUIS available. So everyone has that coverage...UNLESS they work for a small group ( employer with under 50 people) or a Catholic or Jewish organization ( they are exempt) Or a Union who is also exempt.

Then the employers are given the prices to add IVF,and addtional infertility related insurance to their policy. Some will buy the 50K max coverage, some will buy the 10K max coverage etc, some dont buy any....They get to choose what they want ( based on price Im sure).

So two people with United or Empire BCBS etc can have completly differnt coverage for IVF or infertility based on who they work for.

Example- My husband and MRSJ( kathy) used to have the same exact policy with the same company. But Kathys employer added a 10K max to her benefits for all infertility, my husbands didnt.

Hope that better explanation helps.

Re: insurance question

Thanks so much for the information. I still have to make a few more phone calls, but it looks like my DH's open enrollment is in November-December to begin in January. So, I am going to stay with my current doc (who just upped my clomid dosage) until I know I am covered by the "right" insurance. Thanks so much for the guidance...Chat Icon
