Intro and BF question
Hi Ladies- my was born Tuesday 5/11 via c-section at 11 days past due We just got home on Friday and I have a bf/pumping question. Since the hospital, I have been bf'ing during the day and doing formula at night. Her poops have looked like the bf poop- liquidy and mustard colored- and she seems satisfied after bf'ing. My breasts have some hard spots on them and I can express some liquid myself. I want to get a good supply going and some kind of "schedule" for my body. I just tried to pump and I got nothing. Is it too early to start pumping? Is my supply not in? Have I really not been bf'ing for the past 6 days???

Re: Intro and BF question
welcome!
hard spots mean that your engorged you need to release the milk or you'll be in pain.
If your getting no milk, you may already be clogged. Warm/Hot compresses, hot showers, massage the breasts, even massage them under hot shower, before you pump or BF
Make sure you feel safe and relaxed when you pump. Do the breast shields fit right? If they are too small, that might be the case for no milk. I trippled output when I increased shield size.
see info about breast shield size
I BF 2/3 times a day and FF the rest, and we still get mustard poop, sometimes its a big darker than others
If your breasts feel hard, you absolutely have milk in there!

Re: Intro and BF question
Welcome and congrats! I nursed or pumped every 2 hours until I was able to have a supply. it ook em a loooonnng time and I had many challenges along the way. I think some of it mayhave been due to me having a csection as well.

Congrats! To build up your supply, you should either pump or BF every 2-3 hours (day and night). Like PPs have said, the hard spots are probably from engorgement and clogged ducts. Keep massaging them and expressing/pumping to relieve them.

first welcome...
I agree...esp in the beginning..your breast work on a supply and demand...they will only make the milk if you tell it to...so if you want to make the milk you have to bf or then if not pump instead EVERY 2-3 hours around the clock AT LEAST the first 6-8 weeks... so if you give formula at night...you should still pump when you are giving those bottles to tell your body to make the milk at those times! and then therefore you will also have a stash as well!
oh and the pump will need some help bec it is not as good at getting the milk as your baby (the pump is NO WAY a good judge of how much your baby is getting...jut wet diapers) I would masssage the breasts the whole session...and I had to pump at least 20-22 minutes (after my 2nd letdown) to get a good amount and it also varied depending on my diet, time of day, how I was feeling etc...sometimes I would get 1 oz or 6 oz and that is completely normal!

Welcome and ITA with everything she said, especially about the pump not being a good judge about how much milk your really producing. I hope your feeling well.

I agree with everything here and will add that you should get the hands free pumping bra. You can pump while you feed your baby formula. I used to prop my babies on their boppies(I had twins) use my pumping bra to pump BM while I held each of their bottles. I established a very full supply with a pump but like others have said you need to pump religiously every 3 hours even through the night.
