Is 66 years old too old to have a baby??
I stumbled across this article on AOL news about a 66 year old woman who underwent fertility treatment to have a baby and is due to give birth soon.
She will be 84 when that baby is 18! I don't know what to think of that!!
What do you guys think?

Yes, I think 66 is too old for either a man or woman to be a parent of a new born baby. I do not think it is fair to the child.

Re: Is 66 years old too old to have a baby??
I saw your post there - while I did not feel comfortable voting, I think there is a huge difference between becoming a mom or dad at 45 or 50 than becoming a first time parent at 66. That is 16-21 year difference and frankly barring tragedy one expects a 45 year old to reach 80 which gives a child 30-35 years with a parent. While loosing a parent at any age is awful, it is a lot different than loosing a parent because of old age when a child is in grammar or high school.

Re: Is 66 years old too old to have a baby??
I personally DO feel it is too old...I mean most women have gone through full menopause by this age, and there is a reason for that!!
I think about my MIL who is 60...everything is starting to ache and she's becoming slightly forgetful, etc..not saying this happens to everyone....its just that in your 60's things are not the same as they were in your 20's, 30's or 40's.
I don't understand wanting a child in your 60's. I just feel kind of bad for the kid...mom will be 76 at 5th grade graduation and mid 80's at high school graduation...kinda crazy!

Re: Is 66 years old too old to have a baby??
Honestly this is JMO, i think its too old for many 2 reasons. they child will still be fairly young, when she is in her 80's and possbile not around anymore. and #2 the older you are the more risk the child is for complications such as downs syndrome, trisomy18 and 13 and much more. and those numbers are problem very significant,. i just think its a risk not worth taking, and in my opinion selfish.

women over 35 take those risks as well. Should they be exiled from motherhood due to popular opinion?

no, not at all. However there is a big difference between a 35 year old woman and a 66 year old woman, and the risk goes up with age. I dont need to do the math to know this child would be a risk for much more. Second, there are guidlines for IVF, in the USA and other countries, and she wasnt able to get it here probably for those reasons or the UK. She had to go to the Ukran.

For me personally i think it is too old, but it is not my baby. I don't feel it is any ones place to tell her she can't have a baby if she wants one.

I don't think she was suggesting that. The risk at 66 is far greater than at 35 or 45. From the below chart you can see that the rate of downs climbs with every year we age, by 66 it has to me through the roof:
32 1/725 33 1/592 34 1/465 35 1/365 36 1/287 37 1/255 38 1/177 39 1/139 40 1/109 41 1/85 42 1/67 43 1/53 44 1/41 45 1/32 46 1/25 47 1/20 48 1/16 49 1/12
I'm not suggesting that people don't have children because of this chart. Even at 49, you chances of having a baby without downs is 91%-still very good.
In any case, I try not to judge this woman but it is hard as this is just not a choice I would make.
