Is a pedicure okay in 3rd trimester?

I'm supposed to go for my pre-natal massage in a few weeks and I decided to add on a pedicure. (Because we all know how hard it is to make the toes pretty in the 'beached whale' stage) But then I read that massages are okay in pregnancy as long as they don't massage the feet and bottoms of the legs. Chat Icon Guess it makes sense. And now that it's getting warmer, my ankles do swell a bit at times. Should I just cancel the pedicure? Chat Icon

I just had a pedi done. There are certain pressure points that are *thought* to bring on labor, but I'm not sure what they are. I think that you're standard pedi would be fine......

I went on Sunday for a pedi and told the woman I was pregnant. I'm not sure if she did anything different, but the calf massage felt soooo good (I've been getting awful cramps at night).

I dont think anything can trigger labor unless your baby is ready - look how many women on here tried all sorts of stuff to bring on laor to no avail - go get those toes ready for labor... you'll be happy you did!

It better be! hahahahahahahaha

I think that they say that certain pressure points in the feet/calves can bring on labor- but I think it would have to be rubbed really really hard for this to happen. Just to be on the safe side, I just ask them to take it soft while rubbing my feet and calves.

Thats awesome though that you are going for a prenatal massage!! I'm sure you will enjoy it!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

You will just tell them not to "massage" your ankles.

There are some points that could trigger labor.

There are actually some acupressure "points" that can trigger labor. They are being used in acupuncture and some oriental medicine massages.

But you actually have to know where they are.

So, as a "general" recommendation, people who do massages on lower leg, feet and ankles are asked NOT TO massage the area.

Now, some people are also more sensible than others. Chat Icon

From someone who has studied shiatsu there are trigger points that make your uterus contract throughout your body. Depending on the pressure used it can happen. Eastern and western medicine do not recognize each other and everyone who gives pedicures is not trained on trigger points.

PS - the pedicure did work on my SIL for her first pg. Went into labor the next day Chat Icon

Some people are more sensible than others? Are you saying I'm not being sensible by getting pedicures regularly?

Just checking.

That's because they have not been trained properly on that particular topic.

Lots of people are "allowed" to do "massages" in NY without being licensed to do so as a massage therapist. Yet, their "actions" overlap it.

Example: hairdresser giving you a "scalp rub", esthetician, etc....

OK... time for bed for me. I meant sensitive. Some people's "points" are more sensitive than others.

Re: Is a pedicure okay in 3rd trimester?

I hope so because I'm going today for one!! There are certain points that can bring on labor but I am kind of a foot freak anyway so I don't really have them massage my feet.

Im assuming they are referring to reflexology type of massage on the feet where there are suppose to be those trigger points. I wouldnt worry about it...When I get a pedicure she does rub my feet and my ankls/calves but its not like a reflexology type of foot massage.

I say go for it. I know my place offers four separate ones but the regular one is general and straightforward and they don't do too much massage. Enjoy!
