Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
Like I know we stayed around the house this weekend. Took the kids to Crab Meadow yesterday but Ifind myself really being cautious. I stopped going to Dunkin donuts every morning (got a Farberware perc thanks to you guys), I don't buy flavored water and I really try and shop wisely. I changed the way I buy necessities and I try and do food shop with stores close to each other. We have the house up for sale and nothing! Trying to down size.
Anyway else nervous?

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
we have been cautious like you described for years. this weekend we had our annual party, but I bought less food. We had plenty just not as much leftover as we sometimes have. We didn't do much driving or traveling this weekend, we enjoyed our hometown. When DH went to pick up his daughter he took my hybrid. Dh wants to get one now too & leave his work truck at work & only use it during the work day. It would save us about $350 a month in gas. I didn't shop for holiday sales like I did in years past, in fact I rarely shop now. We bring coffee, breakfast, lunch & beverages from home everyday, we have for 6 years.
Its smart to be concerned, there is a lot going on that people are ignoring.

Limiting my errands/use of the car is the main thing.
I don't shop at much at the stores.
I just started a veggie garden.

Not shopping as much. We aren't going on a big vacation. We are holding onto our older cars longer.

Not really. I was always a sale shopper and coupon clipper, so no change for me there.

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
I thought I was cheap before, but with me on unpaid maternity leave, I've gotten even cheaper. We've changed quite a few things to try to save $:
We switched vehicles so DH takes my compact car to work and I take the gas-guzzling SUV on quick errands.
We tuned up our bikes so if we need to run quickly to the bank, grocery store, post office, deli, etc., we don't start the car/SUV. It's actually fun to take our bikes!
We expanded our garden to double the amount of veggies we're planting this year.
We are much stingier with leftovers - For ex., usually we would have given chicken or pork leftovers to our dog but now we make sandwiches and/or salads with the leftovers. Poor b-dog.
I've always clipped coupons and shopped the sales, but now i'm super coupon lady....

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
I'm trading in my giant, gas guzzling SUV for a little car at some point this week.
I also had a BBQ this weekend and didn't go extravagant like I usually do. Just burgers, dogs and chicken. Not a ton of salads and all kinds of crazy stuff.
DH and I are taking his kids on vacation this year, but to a place we're driving to and we're going to do a lot of hanging around by the pool and the beach
ETA: I'm also cooking dinner just about every night and we are bringing our lunches to work.

We usually go to Tanger for Memorial Day sales, but decided it was too much gas this year. I am trying to bring lunch every day instead of buying. We aren't driving places unless we need something.

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
I have to say no. My husband is a cop - so he is not worried about job security. We have always lived frugally and within our means- regardless of how good or bad the economy was doing. We never were crazy shoppers/spenders in the past- just enjoyed ourselves within our means. I think that is a smart way to live regardless of the economy. I really don't feel any difference in the way we are living right now as a result.

Same with me.
I did notice though - I had to go to the outlets when I was in Myrtle Beach to return a pair of pants I had bought and the parking lot was mobbed and there were a ton of people there but, there wasn't a line at the cash registers - I parked far away and was finished a lot quicker than I expected!

there are a lot more europeans and asians who come here to shop now since their currency is so strong against our dollar.
I find that especially in the city.

Not many changes on my end - maybe cutting out some luxuries. I don't leave my car running ever now & maybe plan out errands better.

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
We have to go to an OOT wedding and we are driving instead of flying. Even though gas prices are high, we are saving over $1400 in airfare plus the cost of a rental car. It's only 8 hours away, and with 3 adults in the car we can rotate!
We have put some of our more expensive outdoor projects on hold for a little while to keep our $$$$ in the bank.

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
We never order take out during the week, I cook 6 days a week and I only buy enough for dinner, and leftovers for my husbands lunch. We both bring lunch every day, and we drink alot of water instead of buying soda, iced tea, etc. I refuse to give up my Saturday night dinner out though.
Other than that, nothing really. I have always been a bargain shopper, I clip coupons and buy stuff on sale. We hardly used our heat this past winter so we have enough oil for next year.

In Ireland they have trips just for the Irish to come to NY and shop due to the weak dollar.
They come over just for a long weekend, land at Kennedy, to their hotel, rest for an hour or so then a bus takes them to the outlets at Woodbury Common where they spend THOUSANDS but it's all way over 50% off the outlet prices for them.
My cousin and her BF did this a few months ago bought all of their clothes for the year, clothes for several family members and everyone's Christmas gifts. They said even with the flight and expenses they saved a lot of money.
Europeans are also the ones buying Manhattan and Hampton real estate as it's so cheap since our dollar is so weak.
The poor Irish cousins I grew up with are now rolling in $$$.

Re: Is anyone doing anything different with the way the economy is?
We're seriously cutting down on any unnecessary road trips (we're back and forth on the island all weekend long every weekend for YEARS and I'm just done!). And I've cut down significantly on unnecessary shopping
But we're also doing it because we're about to buy a home, so its definitely a combination of both.

Nothing right now. In fact I think we have been spending MORE recently.
