Is cash appropriate?
I always give cash to the daycare teachers for Christmas, it seems common, but am wondering if it’s ok for a kindergarten teacher. I don’t know what she likes to drink or where she shops, I don’t bake, I’m not creative and don’t have time anyway, I don’t want to buy her something she’ll never use... so when it comes down to it who doesn’t want cash to buy what she wants? Easiest and best gift IMO. I was just worried If say I gave her a card with a nice note and money she’d feel funny about accepting it? What’s a good amount... $50? She has no helper and it’s a class of 21 kids... she busts her butt daily. I want to thank her adequately. There’s no class mom and no class gift. It’s DOE, not sure what their policies are with teachers accepting gifts/cash? Are they allowed? Would a teacher feel weird receiving money or is it standard?

Re: Is cash appropriate?
I think it's fine, but I usually feel weird about it too so I just get a gift card.
Target, Amazon- everyone can use those.
I"d say Visa or Amex so they can shop anywhere but those damn fees to buy the card kill me

You can organize a class gift. I was never the class mom and I used to all the time
Are you friendly with any other mom's in the class?
If not, print out a sheet, put it in an envelope and have the teacher put it in the kids' bags asking for $10 per kid and get a nice gift.

Re: Is cash appropriate?
I'm a teacher and I am not comfortable with cash. I don't expect anything, but most families do gift cards (as do I).

When you receive a gift card from students, what’s the typical amount and what stores do you like to receive gift cards to? I’m just afraid of getting her something she won’t use.

Teachers federal credit union has no fees on those cards if you’re a member. I wonder if other credit unions do too.

Is cash appropriate?
I’ve received cash as a teacher and I’m more than fine with it.
Cash/gift cards range from 5-100, but I teach middle school (and the 100 ones don’t happen every year. Depends on the families).

TD bank also has no fee visa gift cards. Every other year they get rid of it though (too many crooks out there) So I’d call first

Re: Is cash appropriate?
I would do a GC to either Amazon or Target. I think $50 is generous!

I don't give people cash, I feel weird doing so, especially adults. I would get a gift card. Amazon or a Visa type one. $25 - $50 is a good amount

Re: Is cash appropriate?
While cash is a nice gesture, I'm pretty sure the DOE has a policy against cash gifts.

That’s another thing I was worried about. Can any DOE teachers confirm this?

In giving cash. I’m collecting money from parents and giving cash and chocolates from the class. I have given cash for daycare and PreK and not changing it. I hate giving useless crap.

Check school policy. Our teachers cannot accept cash, and cannot accept ANY gift over $20 value.

I would say typical is $25...I receive a lot of Target and Amazon cards, but Starbucks seems to be a big one too. I feel like everyone can use target or Amazon!

Is cash appropriate?
I was class mom for 3 years and always gave a gift card from the class. Personally from my child, I give cash (I’m also crafty and do something personalized as well).

As a teacher cash is awkward. I suggest an Amazon gift card. $50 is very very generous. A $25 gift card is plenty and a very nice gift.

It is against DOE policy to accept monetary value over $5

Amazon is a good choice if you don't want to be too specific with the store.

So then no gift with a monetary value over $5.. so gift cards won’t work either then. Tough to find something decent for $5 or less.

My favorite gift card to give is one to a gas station. Almost everyone drives and can use it.

I'm a teacher here on Long Island in a public district and we are not allowed to accept cash gifts from students/parents. I would purchase an AMEX or Visa giftcard.

I would never give cash and always give gift cards. I usually do target or amazon bc I find that’s helpful, rather than Starbucks which some people don’t drink coffee. Also you can use your target card at Starbucks lol. If you’re a teacher I’m sure you get your fair share of teacher gifts and junk you don’t need.

What happens if the teacher is gifted cash? Do they tell the parent they can’t accept it?
