Is Ceramic or Porcelain Tile better for a kitchen floor?

My dh and i are re-doing our kitchen and putting down tile floor and countertop, the countertop will be porcelain because I like the fact you can put a hot pot on it.

But what is better on a floor?

I was looking into tiles myself, and I found out that porcelain is a stronger material than ceramic. Costs a bit more, but it should be sturdier. However, in general, the cost and strength of the two materials overlap a lot, so there is no clear-cut "better" tile to use.

I read this article when choosing my porcelain tile.

I went with porcelain because it is more 'waterproof' than ceramic. Ceramic is more porous and therefore less stain resistant.

Porcelain is more durable than tile (it goes by PEI ratings). In addition, the color/design goes through the porcelain top to bottom as opposed to ceramic which is design/color baked onto a red or white clay background - so if you chip porcelain, it won't show as much as it would with tile.

Actually, based on the 2nd site I mentioned, the color usually ISN'T all the way through... You would have to check the individual tile, not just base it on being porcelain.

Porcelain has become popular in residential flooring over the last several years. Most people want to buy porcelain because it is the same color and pattern all the way through the tile. However, this is true on less than 5% of porcelain tiles, called through body porcelain. The majority of porcelain tiles are glazed porcelain and when chipped, the porcelain shows.
