UPDATE: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
I posted the other day about the water leak under our hardwood floors in the kitchen. Well, the amount of floor that needs to be replaced is about 9' x 11'. The area that's damaged is is a lot smaller, but the company said it's a lot cheaper replacing a whole area then board by board. We haven't received the quote yet, but I'm sure it's going to be pricey. The other problem is that the floors were put down 7/2001 so they won't even be able to match it exactly. They were prefinished Bruce wood floors.
I wanted to ask you guys, would it be a negative to replace the hardwoods in the kitchen with tile floor instead? I just don't think financially we can afford the hardwood replacement. The only hardwoods in the house is when you first walk in going to the dining room to the kitchen to the side door. That would only leave hardwoods in the dining room and when you first walk in. I just don't know what to do? We can't leave the floor the way it is. It's so buckled and pushed up in the damaged area. Please give your advice. TIA!
ETA: We are trying to sell the house!

I really think it comes down to preference
I love wood floors, but in my kitchen we put down tile b/c I am a klutz and was afraid of spilling stuff and damaging it

I too love wood floors, but we plan to do tile in the kitchen & bath. With all the wear & tear, I find tile easier to keep clean. Especially in a kitchen area. We've all dropped a great bowl of sauce in our lives...

I don't see why they can't match the floors. We knocked down a wall and completed hardwood floors into the room and our floor guy just re-sanded the entire area and polyurethaned. You can't even tell where the old hardwood floor ends and the new begins. Even our contractor was impressed with the job.

We are doing tile in the kitchen - more practical IMO, no matter what the "trend" these days is.

Re: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
We have tile. Much easier to clean and such if we drop something, whereas wood can get damaged after years of water dripping on it from drying dishes, or spills, etc

Us too (although right now we just have the peel and stick linoleum because we only gave our kitchen a face lift).

Re: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
We recently redid our Kitchen and were deciding between hardwood and tile. We ended up with tile and are soooo glad that we made that decision. Between the dog and the amount of things we spill etc etc on the floor I really think the wood would have already been damaged. Tile was the way to go...at least for us!

We have tile in our kitchen and hardwood throughout the rest of our house.
Absolutely nothing wrong w/ tile in the kitchen whatsoever.......plus it breaks it all up a bit between the wood.

Re: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
Glad to hear everyone is going with the tile. Do you think it's much cheaper than the hardwood floor? It'll be at least a 9' x 11' area that will be done in tile. How expensive do you think it will be?
Is it hard to put down a tile floor? Can we do it ourselves or would we need to hire someone? Thanks!

Re: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
You could probably find tile on sale or a discontinued pattern that wouldn't be $$$$$
I wouldn't attempt to do it myself....we had ours done and it looked like a PITA...everthing must be leveled...you have to spread the cement, lay the tile and then grout...

Same here. DH refused to put it in the kitchen because of wear and potential leaks.

Re: UPDATE: Kitchen - Hardwood floors or tile floor???
The going cost to fix the hardwood floors is $1,100. Looks like we're going to have to do tile. Anyone know how? Ok... anyone know anyone here in NC?

Go on craigslist and see if you can find someone who does it on the side. ask them to show you a portfolio (if they have one or for #'s for other homeowners he's done work for so you can see the work for yourself.
$1,100 doesn't sound all that bad! imo

I'll take a look. I'm on craigslist a lot, but not usually for home project. $1,100 is not bad, but when you don't have it, it seems like a milllion dollars! Thanks!

I would go with tile. Easier to maintain.
