I painted over brown and burgundy walls with no primer. It came out great. Just get some good paint. We used Behr premium and have no complaints.

If it's new drywall you have to prime it..

If you are going from darker color to a lighter color you have to prime it..

If you are going from hot pink to deep blue you need to prime it but you would want to tint the primer...(learned this the hard way)

If you are painting a fairly clean light painted wall you dont have to prime it.

Our entire place had off white walls. The paint was in good condition- not peeling of chipping anywhere. We did not prime.

If you remove wall paper, you want to prime then too.

We ALWAYS use a tinted primer, regardless of whether we're painting over a dark color or light.

Depends on what color you are painting over.

We primed the whole house b/c the previous owner's smoked a lot and we wanted to get the smell out.

Same here. We primed to seal in smells so our house wouldn't smell like an old ashtray.

not necessarily. i just removed wallpaper from my dining room, kitchen and hallway and didnt need to prime. i would suggest giving the walls a light sanding just to make sure all the paper is off.

I don't know if you have to, but we primed every wall. The previous owner had almost no color in the house and was a dirty pig, so the walls were dirty. We wanted to get a bright, true color so we used primer and tinted primer in some rooms.

I would say you can skip priming only if you are painting a darker color over a lighter color.
