Is shoe molding absolutely necessary???

What do you think??? I just think it's another expense that we don't need. This would be for LR/DR

Re: Is shoe molding absolutely necessary???

Not if you have carpet. But usually if you have hardwood floors there is a gap by the wall for wood expension and the shoe molding make it cleaner and more finished to cover that gap.

Re: Is shoe molding absolutely necessary???

We don't have it on the tile or the carpeted rooms. I have no idea how the previous owner filled the gaps between the drywall and the tile but they did. So I guess it is not necessary if you do it right. But my parents have it in all the rooms where they have wood floor or tile.

We have base moulding throughtout the house. I think it looks good with the hardwood floors.

IMO, molding makes a room. We transformed the look of our Living room/ Dining room with large crown and base molding and chair rails. It really isn't that expensive if you can do it yourself, also.

ITA in the long run you will be happy you did it. I have it throughout my house and love it! It makes wall colors pop and look beauiful against hardwoods!

I agree, but she's talking about shoe molding.

Kathleen, do you already have base molding? If so, I don't think shoe molding is necessary unless you installed new wood flooring and didn't take off the base molding.

We installed new laminate wood flooring and took off all the base molding and will install new once all the flooring is in this way we don't need to put shoe molding anywhere. The only place we put it in is against the base of the sliding glass door since there was a gap from the wood to the base of the door.

it can be done without it, but the more finished way & really the right way is to do it.

Shoe molding is definitely not necessary. It's all a matter of preference and whether there is a specific need.
