Is it more expensive or cheaper to have a shower at home?
Hi Girls,
I am currently debating whether to have a shower at all but if I do, I'm not sure if I should try to have it at home or at a restaurant-type place.
We are in the process of buying our 1st house (hopefully closing tomorrow) and I'm a student so money is an issue. I don't want my parents to throw me a shower because they are paying our closing costs and gave us a little extra so I don't want them to spend more. I know they'll be buying the baby lots of things. MIL hasn't offered (no surprise) and I'm an only child.
Sooo, I've been wondering how much it would be to have the shower at our new house. It would be early September so we could have it outside.
How much do you think I'd spend? I think we'd probably need to get one of those tents put up, get decorations, have food catered, and whatever else. I'm thinking it will be small, only maybe 30 people. Will this be any less expensive than having it somewhere that costs maybe $25-30 p/person?
TIA!

For 30 people you could def. have a beautiful shower at home and save money. The tent we got is costing us 400 which isn't a bad deal comes with 6 tables 60 chairs and a buffet table, instillation and breakdown included. We got a caterer that is a friend of DH's. It's costing us but def. not as much as it would have been to have 50 people at a restaurant!

this is what we are doing as well.
you figure a restaurant to be close to $40 plus when you add beverages and tax.
we are getting a tent, and catering it ourselves. I really enjoy cooking as do those closest to me so it works out and we definitely save.
the shower is about YOU and the BABY. don't worry about going crazy.
you don't even need a tent, we are just getting one b/c our yard is covered in direct sunlight ALL day. it gets hot. but otherwise, we wouldn't bother.
hot dogs hamburgers buns bbq chicken. salads (mac, potato, green) fixings (sauerkraut, onions) cake
the end.
enlist some of your girlfriends to help. ask your favorite aunt to bring potato salad, etc
everyone understands. everyone loves you. everyone wants to support you. LET THEM. and have fun. don't let this be a source of stress!!!!!
ETA: we guestimated that the price of a shower at a restaurant for us would be betwee 3 and 4 thousand dollars!!
we won't be spending HALF that on the shower at our house, and I am going a bit overboard too!!! it can definitely be done WELL and on the cheap.

Well having it at home isnt always cheaper. I had mine in my yard bc I was on modified bedrest and wanted to be close to home. The tent rental was $300.00 then the table and chair rentals....the food drinks and plates etc all adds up. Not to mention people going in and out of your house then the cleaning up. I was fortunate my Mom paid for everything we got a waitress to put out the food and cleanup so things worked out but it wasnt cheaper but it was convient for me.....

I think it's cheaper to do it at home (depending on how crazy you go with food, etc).
Mine was at my mom's house and I loved that since there was no time limit like there is at a restaurant. The shower was at 2pm (45-ish people) and by 10pm there were still 15-20 people at the house hanging out... we had a great time!

Re: Is it more expensive or cheaper to have a shower at home?
We are having 30 people at my house this weekend for my shower & it is costing my mom a lot less then if we had it at a restaurant. We were going to have it in my backyard & set up an exisiting tent for the food but with the weather the way it has been, we decided to keep it indoors. We can fit the people comfortably.
If it was still outside though, it would have been indoor/outdoor. I tend to like the home showers too bc like other posters said, no time limit. My shower begins at 1PM & there is no end time.

Totally agree with this too. My mom didn't get a tent or tables/chairs... the party was indoor/outdoor so there were some people eating outside on the deck and some inside. We made sure we had seating for the amount of people that were there (between the couches and folding chairs we set up inside, deck furniture & big swing outside, etc there was more than enough seating). I opened gifts and did the games inside.

I would do the same thing....but I am looking at 50-60 people. my yard is MUCH bigger than my house

Re: Is it more expensive or cheaper to have a shower at home?
I guess it all depends on what kind of restaurant you want to have it in. If you do chinese it is much cheaper than doing it at the house. My mom has been pricing around like a mad woman. Apparently the going rate for "excellent" chinese is approx $11 a person.

Re: Is it more expensive or cheaper to have a shower at home?
It all depends on how fancy you want it to be. I had a baby shower at home and it was pretty low key (plus cheap!). There were about 30 people or so. SIL and I baked some trays of lasagna and had a whole array of finger food and cake. She handled the games and favors. SIL and DH went to party city and bought all the house decorations and some balloons. DH had some music set up on speakers via his iPod. Any men who came went with DH to the basement to play cards, while the women were upstairs playing games and chatting.
While it wasn't as fancy as having it catered or in a restaurant, it didn't matter to me. I got to see my friends and we had a great time catching up!
