Is it myth or truth that if your baby naps well during the day, s/he will sleep better at night?
I've heard that good naps and a well rested baby will sleep better at night vs an overtired baby who hasn't slept well during the day. Is this true?
DS takes little cat naps here and there (never in his crib). He'll fall asleep in his swing or in the stroller but that's about it. He's pretty much awake the entire day.

I'll go get this book. Thanks!
I really wish I read more of these books while I was pregnant. I spent too much time reading about pregnancy and not enough about after the baby arrives.

Wasn't true for my little guy. He only took 2x20 minute naps during the day, if we were lucky. (Until he was 10 months old.)
But he was sleeping through the night really early.

True for my DC's....
Just w/ my DS, his last nap can't be too long or he has a hard time going to sleep...

For my son...TRUTH!
I love the quote (and say it often) "sleep begets sleep"
Even now at 2 he takes a 2 - 3 hour nap and then sleeps at night for 12 hours...I love sleep so much!!!

Re: Is it myth or truth that if your baby naps well during the day, s/he will sleep better at night?
Totally 100 million trillon percent true! Even with my almost 5 year old....the kid needs to nap and if I get lucky and he falls asleep during the day, he sleeps much later the next morning.
SLEEP BEGETS SLEEP! If they are overtired they sleep horribly at night.
I still let my 2 year old take 3 hour naps if thats how long she naturally sleeps for. sometimes she'll wake up at 4pm and still go to bed by 7pm and sleep for 12 hours. Its glorious!

Re: Is it myth or truth that if your baby naps well during the day, s/he will sleep better at night?
naps and routine i find are both key to a good nights sleep... my son always used to cat nap throughout the day.. usually 2-3 30 min... but that was all he needed... never in the crib but in the chair or pack n play.... then he would sleep 7p-7a... skip one of those naps and i was toast... recently he switched it up and takes one 2 hours nap after lunch... which is sooooo much better for me...
but routine i find makes even more of a difference... yesterday we had to pick someone up at the airport at 8pm and he was awake all night as a result

Re: Is it myth or truth that if your baby naps well during the day, s/he will sleep better at night?
as for my DS... it's true to a point...
if he doesn't nap much at all, he'll sleep miserably at night.
HOWEVER, if he naps longer than usual, he'll also have a poor nights sleep and wake up early the next morning.
I think for him, he has an optimal sleep schedule, and any deviations will create chaos.

Yup so true. DD didn't nap today since we had a party and she just now went to bed, and is still not sleeping. She's normally in bed by 8 when she naps.

Definitely true. If a baby becomes to over tired it then becomes difficult for them to sleep. I also recommend Healthy Sleep habits, Happy Child.

True for us, however, I have had a couple of days where DD doesn't nap at all and then will sleep the entire night---pure exhaustion!

Have you considered letting him nap on his belly? I have this problem with Joseph before I realized he was a belly sleeper.

I had the same experience. DS never a good napper but slept through the night. He rarely was overtired.
