Is it ok NOT to wear a dress if the invitation says semi formal attire?
would it be ok to wear black dressy pants and a cute silk top ?

sorry, dress it is. Formal would mean fancy dress or gown and semi-formal means less fancy dress or gown.

Thanks, I was thinking the same. I guess I'll have to go out and buy a dress, I hate dress shopping

I would wear a dress, but I suppose you could get away with it. I wouldn't bc I would hate to be uncomfortable and feeling under dressed KWIM?

I have an aunt that doesn't wear dresses. She only wears pants because she HATES her legs...and shes super short so long dresses make her look like a stump. She wore pants to my wedding and looked great!
I think as long as its dressy, pants and a top are ok.

I actually googled it and some sites say black dressy pants and a cute top is fine for semi formal, I even read that dark jeans (I guess really dark blue /navy or black?) and a cute top is also ok  I just feel like I buy a new dress every year (this will be 4th) for DH's company party and never wear it again.

I think black pants & a nice shirt is fine!!! For DH's holiday party it says "semi formal" and I always wear black pants (and I'm certainly not the most dressed-down person there). I don't think you need to go get a new dress.
