Is it worth spending now?
My son just turned 5 ... November baby and is in kindergarten. We are trying to get him more engaged in learning his numbers/ letters. Not only is he young for kindergarten but he might have an academic delay. He also has been diagnosed with verbal apraxia but not autistic. Do you think that spending money on a tablet for educational apps is worth it ? Do you think it would assist in getting up to speed?

Re: Is it worth spending now?
I'm not a huge fan only because my son became easily addicted to the iPad to the point where he loses his shit if it's time to take it away.
I also see the same behavior in his cousins and other kids his age.
We limit his use now but he still has a hard time when we take it away.

My son doesnt act this way. Every kid is different. My son learned a lot from the ipad. A lot!!!
You could also get the leap frog letter factory dvd its awesome. My son knew all his letters and sounds by 22 months from that dvd!
Starfall.com is also a great website

It's not a pissing match. I'm stating my opinion. Of course every kid is different.
Just want to share the ugly side.

I wasnt making it a "pissing match". I was showing the other side of this since your post seemed very against ipads. I wanted her to know that not all kids act that way and not to be afraid of geting an ipad since its a great learning tool.

Well your "MY kid doesn't act that way" comment seems a little much.

I understand exactly what you are saying as we went through this with my stepson. Even though I know every kid is different, it's still the reason why I am gun shy about electronics and video games with my DS. I won't buy him a video game or think it's necessary for him to own an iPad.
In regards to to the OP, my son was a little behind last year and he would play some games online: abcya and there are some good sight word apps. I would also do worksheets with him from the books you can buy at the dollar tree. They also have free online printouts where the kids can color and learn.

No.
I was stating facts. You brought parenting into it. At least that's how your post reads.

Yep. I also think both have similar issues ;). Wish we never introduced him at times because it's all he talks about and you can't engage him easily once he's playing with it.

We have every tablet out there for our DD. She has more electronics than me and my husband combined lol. She is not addicted to them and if you put limits on them, you shouldn't have a problem.
She is autistic but very high functioning and was non-verbal until she was 4.5. Tablets were the best thing ever. In the beginning we only put on "educational" fun apps to help her learn and she did.
Starfall is a great app/website and they use that is school as well. Brain Pop Jr. is great with little videos for social behavior. If you do a search there are ton of apps that look like games but teach letters, numbers, site words. DD also loved the Teach Me games.
We also loved all the leap pad toys but I think they may be a little old for that now.

Starfall is a great program and I think my DS learned a lot from it. You can get it as an app, but we also have it on our desktop, which is where DS started using it. There is a free version, and the full version, which we paid for one or two years, because he played it almost every day. The full version has more available and if you go on the free version, you can see all the program material, the stuff you pay for is greyed out.
My DS loves the iTouch and the iPad but we do limit them. I have always used a timer for them (and the computer) so he knows when the timer goes off, he has to get off the device.
