Is it wrong
if I do not go to my holiday party tonight? I am just not in the mood, and it is in Manhattan. They have busses to bring us back and forth, but I just cant deal with the trip, being far from home when I am worried about my mom, etc. I also heard that the day after the party is a huge "buzz fest", with people making comments about who drank what, who was talking to who, etc. I have no time for that crap.

Re: Is it wrong
I wouldn't go, sounds like a hassle. Tell your husband to go buy you a bottle of wine and snuggle at home. That's always more fun, anyway.

A few girls who are NOT going to the party, are going local for dinner and drinks. I think I am going to go with them instead.

I wouldn't worry about it. You have a lot going on and I am sure your company will understand.

Re: Is it wrong
I never went to mine. well, I shouldn't say that. I did go for a few years and that's why I stopped going. Not a fan of watching my co-workers getting bombed and eating sub-standard food. I would rather be home with DH.

Re: Is it wrong
I just have a feeling tomorrow I am going to be asked a million questions why I did not go. Plus, I am new here, and think it looks bad that I do not go to the first Holiday Party.

Re: Is it wrong
Being that this is your first holiday party with this company (is that right?) I would normally say that you should make an appearance, but I think you have enough going on in your life right now and don't need any added stress or hassle. Nothing wrong with not going at all. I would maybe skip drinks with the other girls though unless it won't seem like you are snubbing everyone else.

Not wrong at all to skip it. I admit that I have been ditching my parties for a while now...just not into it and there is always so much I'd rather be doing...so I do.

Re: Is it wrong
IMO, it's not wrong
At the end of the day you have to do what's right for you and you have alot going on
That being said...
Public perception and being a part of the team and fraternizing is as important, if not more important than your actual performance. These companies look at these parties as a way to extend good will to their employees and to say thank you. If you've been there for a while and can't make the party - that's one thing.
But for your first year, when the new employee doesn't attend a social event that the heads throw, people notice. It may result in nothing - it may be seen as a snub. And sometimes, that stuff comes out in a review. Of course, it's not stated - they make up another reason. Every company is different. From what you say about the Tuesday buzzfest - it sounds like they'd notice.
If it were me, since it's your first party with this company, I'd suck it up and go
