No, I've not heard of any other MDs saying that sushi is OK.

Me either. We all know too much tuna or salmon etc is bad for mercury reasons. But raw fish in general could be harmful. God forbid of a parasite or anything. Please unless its veggies like an avocado roll stay away.

ahhh, long lives the sushi debate...

my doctor OK'd it too... once in a while, not daily.

the chances of food poisoning from raw fish are 1 in 2.5 million

the chances of food poisoning from cooked chicken are 1 in 25,000

pick your poison!

if you are worried about mercury, dont eat it regularly Chat Icon enjoy, just eat at a clean, reputable place!

I'd trust sushi from a good sushi bar more then I would trust fast food. Here is a great NYTimes article about the subject:

Re: Is my dr the only one that says its ok to eat Sushi?

My OB said eat lots of salmon. He said the benefits completely outweigh the negatives and wanted me to have it at least 2x a month.

But not raw.

I've heard OBs saying non-raw sushi that is prepared somewhere clean where they clean the knives and boards before switching from raw suishi to the cooked sushi is fine. So if you want a california roll and can tell the place to make it on a clean board and with clean knives (they usually "get it" when you tell them you're PG), then it's ok. Same with a shrimp roll or veggie roll.

But I've never heard of an OB saying that raw fish or seafood sushi is ok.

Well of course. In moderation however IMO id rather just stay away then take my chances with how every place handles & cares for their raw fish ya know?

My OB said it was fine. He explained it to me this way, with raw fish you are worried about food borne illnesses this could happen from any food you get while out. If you trust your sushi place it is NOT an issue. I decided to forgo it only because I'm paranoid and I'd think from the minute it entered my mouth that It was making me sick.

Yes home though where i prepare it. I never order it out. Just dont. But for that matter really we can say anything can be harmful if ill prepared. Im just saying not the raw stuff. Cooked sushi is fine in moderation.

Re: Is my dr the only one that says its ok to eat Sushi?

My OB didn't green light it, but I'm sure in moderation, if it's from a really clean place (and it's super fresh) that it's fine.

I've stayed away from anything raw, but trust me I've been very tempted!!

On that note, I've been super paranoid about meats too during this pregnancy-only buying organic, grass fed, antibiotic free chicken.

Whatever you do, DO NOT read "Skinny *****-Bun in the Oven". It will mess with your head about meat and dairy!

Re: Is my dr the only one that says its ok to eat Sushi?

I read an article recently that women in Japan literally eat sushi throughout their pregnancy..it's more about food born illness than anything...I've had cooked rolls I don't think I'll take the chance with raw but I'm anal I think if I were a bit more laid back i would totally...I eat soft pasteurized cheeses throughout my pregnancy Chat Icon

Both of my OBs from 2 different practices were fine with it.

Not for nothing but what do you think women in Japan eat while pregnant? This is a staple in their diet. Don't go crazy eating it and get it from a place you feel comfortable with. Chat Icon

I had sushi a few times during my pregnancy. I didn't even bother to ask my OB about it the 2nd time around. What the heck do women in Japan eat while pregnant if not sushi? Chat Icon

Thanks everyone- I should have stated that my doc said to limit tuna especially, but salmon (which is my fav!) is ok. Its good to hear my docs not the only one - though i totally trust him. I just wanted some back up for when my family raises their eyebrows upon seeing me happily eating it!

I'll only order from a good place and not too often. Chat Icon

That's pretty funny!

My OB hasn't said one way or the other but I would just be leary of raw anything. That's JMO.
