Re: Is rawhide good for a ....
Scout gets bored with the rubber bones -- he loves rawhide. I know it's not good, but sometimes - like SAturday mornings - he's just baking away for attention and DH and I need some snuggle time and I wind up giving him a small rawhide. The kongs don't hold his interest either -- so, what to do???

Take a Kong and put a treat in the middle of it... he'll go to work for HOURS until he can get the treat out..

I tried that - he won't. He gets bored with it.....I have about 5 different kongs and have put everything in them - but if he can't get it out immediately, he gets bored and leaves it. If he DOES get it out right away, well then he's done and has no more use for the klong!!

Not while they are young...you have to wait to give them rawhides till they are older and can digest thing easier.

Misty was the same way...then I discovered Kong Stuffin. It comes in a whipped cream type can and you squirt the tiniest amount in the Kong. They can get a taste of it with their tongue and love it. Misty works on it for hours. Peanut Butter works almost as well, but not quite.

I never give boogie greenies or rawhides- he got VERY sick from greenies- a friend who was watching him gave him a pig ear which he LOVED but I know it is bad for him, so I do not give them to him!

Re: Is rawhide good for a ....
Abby wont touch the kongs, we tried everything.
We have occasionally given her rawhide...its like Pure Doggie crack I tell you...Or the bully sticks which are better then raw hide, but its usually as a treat and we monitor how long she has it, because the rawhide can get gloppy in their throats and build up ....

Boogie loves those cow hoves too- I stopped giving them to him for the same reasons... but are they okay? I would LOVE if he could stay busy with those for awhile!

We've been giving them to Misty for over two years now and have never had a problem. She always has a couple laying around cuz they take her a long time to chew.

The ONLY time i'll give them a rawhide is when i'm with him and can watch him. once they start to get all gross and stringy... in the garbage they go.
But no they're definitely not recommended and our vet specifically told us to stay away from them!

many dogs, especially small dogs can choke on them and/or can't digest them.

Re: Is rawhide good for a ....
I've heard mixed things. With my dog it's either rawhide or our furniture and molding. I spoke with the vet about this and she said as long as she doesn't bite off big chunks it's ok.
ETA: Occasionally she gets bully sticks but she eats those way to quickly! We also give her Kongs- she has 2 but she needs her variety. She mainly chews on the rawhide while we watch tv.

Peanut Butter, Yogurt, Kong Stuffing -- they all give him diarrhea. And, since he is still into eating his poops - - guess who has to run around after him with newspapers under his butt?? While he poops 4-5 times, changing his spot for each?
I need an alternative ladies....any ideas? Are the hooves OK or no to those too? When baby comes, he is going to need something to keep him occupied....

Did you try the bully sticks? They are a little more expensive but Geez are they crack like and they are 100% digestable....
Abby likes they more then the actual Rawhide....I just cannot take the smell of them in the house, on her breath etc( but am gonna try again once the PReggo nose fades)...
I think the redbarn brand is highly rated...

No - I saw them at a dog show this weekend but DH thought they were a no-no like rawhide. Are they OK??
And what about the hooves?

I have no idea about the hooves, I know the bully sticks are 100% natural ( they are cow penis ) and digestable and thats what was rec'd to us to use in place of raw hide and Abby loves it just as much.....But like I said, it gets sticky and smells and I hate the smell ( Preggo nose) .....

How fast does Abby go through a bully stick?
I gave Dottie one of those edible Nylabones and she ate it in like 5 minutes and had baaaaaddd diarrhea.
