is rice cereal any less binding than oatmeal?
DD has become constipated since starting solids, even though I use pears with the cereal.
She won't go for a few days and today when she finally went, it was painful for her.
She is EBF

Yep! Rice cereal was the first thing DS tried at 6 months. He was EBF before that. Within one week of trying it we stopped. He was constipated for 2 months!!!!!!!!
Our pediatrician told us to try 1 oz of prune juice, but DS would refuse it. He only wanted boob to drink. He started taking prunes, Gerber stage 1. But as I stated above, it took a looooooong time for him to poop without nuggets.
ETA: Once he started cereal again around 9 months, the dr told us to mix prunes with oatmeal. She said they would both help him go.

yup dd is fine with the rice cereal the oatmeal actually makes her go a lot and very loose so i give her oatmeal only once a day and rice twice a day bc it doesnt constipate her just gives her a firmer bm (tmi) but i can see it having a constipating affect so using them together is probably ur best bet or if its really bad just use the oatmeal

Re: is rice cereal any less binding than oatmeal?
well she gets very gassy and squirmy to get the gas out, but not as bad as when she was a newborn and getting some formula (before going EBF).
It is a very firm, even formed BM with some mushy poop after it.
If I drank more water, would that help?
She's not really all that into spoon feeding yet....she doesn't even finish a full container of stage 1

It just takes some time. At least she is getting something out. Poop changes after the first few months and they don't go as often when EBF. DS wouldn't poop for a week and was so uncomfy, then push out a tiny little marble. The marble is what I was told was showing the constipation. (You'd think a week of not pooping would show that)
DS wasn't into spoon feeding either. It would take him two days just to finish the one container of prunes.
I'd talk with your dr. They usually let you know if your child is experiencing normal changes in bowels, or if there is a problem.

Rice was the WORST for DS - the only thing that was ok was barley. However, we had to mix in some prune juice sometimes - the switch from EBF to adding food and formula was really hard on his tummy

Happy Babies makes a line of cereals called Happy Bellies that have probiotics to help things keep moving. They make brown rice, oatmeal and multi-grain. I was worried about constipation when I started my DD on solids but it wasn't a problem. It can't hurt to try, right?
