Re: Is San Francisco kid friendly?
San Fran has pretty decent public transportation. There are some not-so-great neighborhoods, just like NYC, but the biggest challenge is if you are out walking in a hilly area. We are taking DS there in Feb. to visit some family.

Re: Is San Francisco kid friendly?
Public transportation in the city is pretty good if you are touring the downtown/wharf areas. The further out you go from downtown, the buses and streetcars run less frequently, but I think this is only a problem in the more residential areas. If you are sightseeing, you can get to most things by bus, BART or streetcar. I think you could navigate with a stroller fairly easily. I have a friend who is disabled and in a wheelchair and the accessiblity of the public transportation is one of the reasons she lives there. As soon as you get there, buy yourself a MUNI map in a local drugstore - it has all the public buses and streetcar lines shown on the map and it will help you navigate the system tremendously.
Public transportation in the more suburban areas outside the city, Berkeley, Sausalito, etc. is not as good, but you could always rent a car for a day or two if you wanted to get out of the city. You don't really need a car, and depending on where you stay in the city, parking can be a real pain in the a$$.
If you do go, check out the Exploratorium at the Palace of Fine Arts. It is a hands on science museum with lots of fun stuff for kids.
ETA: The hills can be a challenge, but usually, you can find a less hilly route

What wonderful information; thank you so much! We're staying in the Union Square area - do you think we're located well within the city?

Union Square is a great area. There's lots of activity and you can access public transportation.
In addition to Fisherman's Wharf, you can take the bus to Haight-Ashbury and take a nice stroll over to Golden Gate Park. GGP is huge, though, which has its pros and cons.
Have a great trip!

Union Square is a great location if you want to use public transit. Many of the bus lines go through there and you can walk to a BART station and the cable car turnaround at Powell St. (cable cars are more for fun and for tourists - not for quick, direct transportation routes.)
FM me if you have any other questions - I lived there for many years.

Re: Is San Francisco kid friendly?
my a$$ was burning pushing my stroller up those hills!
We rented a car and walked a lot...it was fine.
ETA: crazy windy that I did not expect. A hoodie would be perfect
