IS saving your pictures to shutterfly, snapfish, etc. safe enough?
I am trying to back up all my pictures by uploading them to shutterfly. But I am thinking, I should start either having them printed out by them or save them another way. Is it good enough to just save to shutterfly or do you fear them going under and your pictures disappearing anyway? What do you do?

I have a lot of my pictures on shutterfly. I don't think I ever really thought about then going under. I do also save a lot of my pics on a scan disk. this way they don't take up a lot of space on my laptop.

Honestly, I would not trust it. I save all my pictures in a pictures folder on my computer that is backed up nightly. There are so many memories in those pictures, I could not bear it if I lost them.

Smugmug.com
It backs up on 6 servers all around the world. No limit. Very cheap.

It's a good start. I was able to recover probably 90% of my pictures from them when my primary backup drive failed.
I intend to keep my pictures everywhere DVD, online photo places, and my computer to start. I am contemplating another external hard drive and looking into online back up websites. It seems they mirror your hard drive and I'd really like something that archives it. I need to make time to look into it.

Just because they have mulitple servers, that doesnt mean anything.
Company could go away, bankrupt, etc and then all 6 servers are going away...
I wouldn't depend on a third party company as a backup. Buy a USB drive and backup to USB drive and DVD.

... and keep the backup in either a computer media fireproof safe or off-site. I keep backups of all my stuff on a drive at work. Standard fireproof safes for paperwork at home aren't designed to keep computer media safe in a fire. If you go through the effort of backing up stuff to insure against your computer crashing, you should take the extra step and protect against flooding, fire, theft, etc.

I upload them all to shutterfly, but I also print them all out. I guess I could save to a disk too.

I upload them to Kodak Gallery. I also plan to keep the memory card in my camera for now. Also...Kodak gallery has an option where you can have them put all your pics on a disk, in folders, etc. I plan to order that asap b/c I worry if our house is broken in to and our camera/computer are stolen. Also a house fire.

Online services utilize a compression factor to save space, files downloaded from online services often don't look nearly as nice as the originals
