Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

I say "NO"

My sister in law named her daughter Sophia (she's 16 months old now) and about when she turned one she started calling her Sophie as a nickname (in fact, she said as her "little girl nickname")

I know its her kid and she can call her whatever she wants, but on principle, and to prove my nutty in laws wrong, Sophia IS a totally different name from Sophie, correct?

I guess it can be a nickname. If we were having a girl, I wanted to name her Sophie, but dh wanted Sophia, and said I could call her Sophie. But I said absolutely not! I guess it just depends on the person.

We just got a puppy that was named Sophia and they(the old owners) also called her Sophie. Now we call her Sophie. I think it is!

No-they different names. How can one be a nickname for the other when they have the same number of letters. Aren't nicknames supposed to be shortened versions of the full name?

Well, technically it IS shorter.... Sophia is 3 syllables, and Sophie is two. Also, Jack is a nickname for John and they have the same # of syllables.......

I have a good friend who calls her daughter Sophie and her given name is Sophia.

My daughter will be named Madelyn but we plan on calling her Maddie, yet, I am not choosing that her given name on her birth certificate be "Maddie". So does that make ME nutty...?

No, my name is Kathryn on my birth certificate and I go by Kate. But I was always under the impression that Sophie wasn't a nickname. To me, it would be like our calling our son Christian, but Christopher is on his birth certificate, KWIM?

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

Like I posted earlier..... this is NOT a nickname.

That would the equivalent of

Mary - English
Marie - French
Maria - Spanish

They all mean the same but in a different language.

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

I guess I don't see what the big deal is....It could be a nickname if she wants it to be. I have a cousin whose name is Sophia and we call her Sophie.

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

I think it is up to her parents to decide what name they want to call her

my MILs name is Elizabeth but her nickname is Bunny
DHs father s name was James but his nickname was Buddy

DD is Brianna but she was crabby so we started calling her CrabbyPatty from Spongebob.....then it go shortentened to Patty
so really anything can be a nickname
but I found a few websites that say the nickname for Sophia is SOPHIE
CLICK

In the OP I said she can call her DD whatever she wants, the QUESTION was whether or not Sophie is a nickname for Sophia.

"Maddie" is less letters AND less syllables so it would fit both MY definition and YOUR definition of a nickname-so no, you are not nutty (though I wouldn't say you were nutty anyway, just that you do not share MY concept of a nickname.

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

Many names that are nicknames are also names themselves. Lottie is a nickname for Charlotte, Ty is a nickname for Tyler, Jim is a nickname for James, Bill for William etc. yet all of these names can stand alone.

I understand the different language arguement, but I doubt most people consider that when nicknaming their child.

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

According to The Big Book of 60,000 Baby Names:

Sophia is a Greek name meaning wise one.

Sophie is also Greek - listed as a variant of Sophia - same meaning listed.

Variant spellings of Sophia include: Sofeea, Sofi, Sofia, Sofie, Sophea, Sopheea, SOPHIE, Sophy

So technically - no it's not a nickname . . . it's a variant of the same name. . . but it's commonly used as a nickname.

Marie and Maria and Mairead are all language variants of the Latin/Hebrew name Mary. They all mean the same thing.

Re: Is Sophie a nickname for Sophia??

I think it's both. It can definitely be a nickname, especially since it ends in the "ie" that we tend to use for nicknames. But like AP said, I always thought of Sophie as a variation of Sophia in other languages. I know in German it is spelled Sofie, but pronounced Sofia.
