Is the Lead test manditory?
at my last Dr's visit,he told me to go to the lab and gave me an RX for a lead test. He said it's required by the state.
So of course I dont want to be neglectful, but i asked a couple of mothers and most said they never heard of it, but one said its VERY important to get this done(though she is a bit of a drama queen )
anyone????

Sarah is 2 and she's never had it. Our dr never had us do bloodwork at 1 year old either.

You can get it done with a finger prick. Why wouldn't you? Its such a serious consequence for a simple test.

I've never heard of it but I'm not in NY. Our doctor here has a led checklist that you go through to show if you would have any exposure to lead. We also don't do 1 year bloodwork here either which I am glad, I couldn't handle it. DH would have to go.

Re: Is the Lead test manditory?
I just had this done recently for my son. It really wasn't bad at all. I was dreading it, they were so great at the Quest I went to. It was done SO quickly. I called and asked what the best time would be and they said between 1-3. I was in and out in I'd say 5 minutes. The actual blood took about 10 seconds to take.

Re: Is the Lead test manditory?
I don't think I was given a script for it, but I would say it's VERY important - particularly if you live in an older neighborhood or house.
My girlfriend lives in Maine with her DH & DD. They bought a house up there. They were feeling sick for months. Her daughter started to suddenly miss milestones. The doctor requested a blood test. Her daughter had an extremely high level. They found that they all had lead poisoning. They had chalked it up to the flu. It's definitely no something to mess around with - when it's severe enough it can lead to mental retardation).
Sorry to post such a depressing story. I don't want to scare anyone but it is something to look into.
If you have the script, I would use it.

My son had the lead test and other tests done with 1-year bloodwork. My daughter will have the same in May.

1-My house is brand new-not even 2 yrs old... 2-Id hate to have my son's blood drawn if not really necessary 3-the quest lab by me is always packed, a real PIA to wait w/2 very active babies! But now that I heard the story about the whole family having lead poisoning...I will take him asap- better to be safe than sorry! Thank you all for your responses

Re: Is the Lead test manditory?
it really wasnt that bad. i procrastinated for 3 months and then decided to do it. its piece of mind. make sure to give water the DC before going it helps to find the veins.

Re: Is the Lead test manditory?
At 15 months old- we were sent for the 1 yr old blood work, which includes the lead test...
While I felt bad for DS- there was no thinking twice about this...
Why wouldnt you want to have this done? If something was wrong (whether in the lead screening or generally with his blood count) wouldnt you want to know and get it taken care of immediately?
DS was sooo good- didnt cry anymore than he does when he gets his shots...and Im sure he isnt scarred for life over it....
I hear ya on the business of the labs... bring someone with you, you can take your DC outside for a walk and let your friend listen for your #... This is what I did and it worked out wonderfully...
My motto is- I never want to look back and say "if only I wouldve ...."
