Is the Medela Pump in Style really worth the $$$? Any alternatives?
I'm hoping to BF, and will be returning to work, so will need to pump. I'd like to register for the pump-in-style, but I'm afraid it will be quite a waste of $$$ if BFing doesn't work out for me.
Is there a decent, lower-cost alternative? Or should I not even register for one and wait to see how BFing works out for me?
TIA!

I am in the same delima. I have a manual pump from Medela.
I plan on renting a pump (commercial grade) and see how it goes.

I used the Ameda Purely Yours. I thought it worked well. It was given to me by SIL so I'm not sure how much it costs.

Go on to lactationcare.com -- you can get a PIS for around $200.

I was lucky enough to have a colleague loan me her Medela Pump in Style - it's really great and very fast.

I recommend the Medela Pump in Style. I would register for it. I registered for it and didn't know if BFing would work. You can return the pump....as long as it is unopened. So I didn't open the pump until weeks after DD was born and I was in full swing with BFing.

Re: Is the Medela Pump in Style really worth the $$$? Any alternatives?
Has anyone else borrowed a pump? I would like to borrow my friend's pump and maybe replace a few parts (tubing, etc) to be on the safe side. There are articles warning against borrowing but I wanted to hear if anyone has experience with borrowing? If so, what parts did you replace, if any?
Thank you!

My friend gave me her Pump in Style when she was done with it. I replaced the shields, bottles and tubing.

I borrowed my SIL until I got one too. As long as you know the person, I don't see the problem. The milk doesn't travel down the tubes to the pump anyhow.

FYI - you can't return it to BBB even if its unwrapped!

I have this pump and have no complaints. I got it without a carrying case for around $200 and just put it in a case that I already had.

You can return it to BRU. I returned one b/c I wanted the PIS and it wasn't that model. It was not opened so they didn't give me a problem at all.

I would wait and see if breastfeeding works out for you and then get a pump. You'd hate to spend the money (or someone else) and be unable to return it if that were the case.
I say that b/c you might have a nesting fit one day and open it and "clean it" in preparation for the baby and then be unable to take it back. Or it could be bought too in advance and even unopened with a receipt not be able to return it (granted store credits are nice, but sometimes the time period where you can get one of those even expires).

I don't see the problem either, if you rent a hospital-grade pump isn't that the same thing?!! As long as it was someone I knew (just so I knew they didn't abuse it or anything), I think it would be fine.
As for my answer to the original question, I bought the Pump in Style b/c I knew I would be pumping when I went back to work so I needed a powerful pump. I did like it, no complaints, but it is expensive. I would say it's maybe a good idea to wait to buy it until you're sure you will need it, in case you can't return it.

Thanks, ladies!! You made me feel a lot better about it. If you don't mind me asking, where did you buy the replacement parts from? I will be borrowing the Medela In Style Advance.
