Depends on if you signed a contract or lease. I think in the city the landlords are required to turn it on by Oct. 15th, but I could be wrong.

Re: IS there a date that a landlord legally MUST turn on your heat??
This is the regulation for NYC, I am not sure where you are or if it applies to LI
The 2006/2007 “heat season” begins October 1, 2006 and continues through May 31, 2007. During heat season, residential owners with tenants are required by law to maintain an indoor temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit between 6:00 A.M. and 10:00 P.M. when the outdoor temperature falls below 55 degrees. Between 10:00 P.M. and 6:00 A.M., building owners must maintain an indoor temperature of 55 degrees when the outside temperature falls below 40 degrees.

What do you mean? We signed a contract for a rental agreement....we are in Nassau though. Are there any regulations for Nassau people????

Re: IS there a date that a landlord legally MUST turn on your heat??
This is the criteria for heating in Nassau County:
Heat
Owners of rental housing in ETPA municipalities must supply heat from October 1 through May 31 to tenants in multiple dwellings. While the heat and hot water requirements vary in these municipalities, they all require owners to supply heat from October 1 through May 31 to tenants in multiple dwellings if outdoor temperatures fall below 55 degrees Fahrenheit.
Nassau County
In Nassau County, each apartment must be heated between 6:00 AM and 10:00 PM to a temperature of at least 68 degrees Fahrenheit, and between 10:00 PM and 6:00 AM to a temperature of at least 65 degrees Fahrenheit.
I found this here. But I am not sure how multiple dwellings is defined.

Are you in a legal apartment? If not, then they are not required to do anything.

Re: IS there a date that a landlord legally MUST turn on your heat??
I had that problem too a few years back. I had a living room/combo with all utilities included. So when he didn't turn on the heat, I would just turn the oven on and open the oven door. I figured I'd get him one way or another.
I also believe it's May 15 to October 15. Is there a website for the town you live in that gives any info on that? Whatever happens, good luck with it!

Re: IS there a date that a landlord legally MUST turn on your heat??
I just thought of an idea... leave a message for your landlord telling him to disregard your last message and that you bought a whole bunch of space heaters.
they use a TON of electricity and are no where near as efficient as reg. heat.
I bet you'll have heat in no time
