Is there a kindergarten test to see if they move up to first grade?
I am so confused bc a friend at work said she got a letter that said her son is in jeopardy of retention bc he failed by 2 points. What test? And do I just assume since I wasnt contacted my dd is going to first grade? The teacher hasnt given me reason to believe otherwise but I was shocked to hear about this test. I also thought there was a law "no child left behind". I dont understand why she received such a letter

There is a test, I forget what it's called, but I believe they do it in the winter and then again towards the end of the year to test their reading and writing comprehension. I don't know if "no child left behind" means kids don't get left back. I think it actually means the opposite, like we won't let your child slip through the cracks. We'll make sure they are where they need to be with their education- and that may mean repeating a grade for some kids. But that's just my understanding. Maybe a teacher can chime in and give more info.

My DD is in Kindergarten now and I haven't heard of any test. And for a teacher to send such correspondence in a letter is terrible. No phone call about the teacher's concerns before now? No phone call about the test and results? That's just wrong on so many levels.....
ETA: There are periodic benchmarks that are done on every grade level. Those usually don't warrant retention but possibly services for remediation.

That also surprised me that it was written in a letter. Though I am sure she was probably notified of "some" of his issues. I still believe in communicating via telephone or conference.

Re: Is there a kindergarten test to see if they move up to first grade?
Just to clarify "No Child Left Behind" does not mean, not leaving children back a grade.
From education.com...
The primary purpose of NCLB is to ensure that students in every public school achieve important learning goals while being educated in safe classrooms by well-prepared teachers. To increase student achievement, the law requires that school districts assume responsibility for all students reaching 100% student proficiency levels within 12 years on tests assessing important academic content. Furthermore, NCLB requires schools to close academic gaps between economically advantaged students and students who are from different economic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds as well as students with disabilities.
A child can still be left back.

Re: Is there a kindergarten test to see if they move up to first grade?
They told us about some type of "informal" testing earlier in the year. I was never given a score but I did ask the teacher about it, she said my son did fine. They never said anything about a test to move on.
I would be really upset if I found out that my son was being held back because of a test. If there was any issues with his learning she should have known about it before May.

A child can still be left back. Based on what you wrote, you would think this child would have gotten some type of help before sending out a random letter, right?

I kinda remember with my dd hearing she was on a 94% level for reading so maybe thats the test? Maybe I never considered it a "test".

My daughter was given the BOEHM test, which tested concepts. I dont know if this has any impact on 1st grade.

Re: Is there a kindergarten test to see if they move up to first grade?
1. you must have parental approval to hold a child back in elementary school. This is protected by the Supreme Court - parents have the fundamental right to direct the upbringing and education of their children
2. If this is NYS they are in direct violation of RtI. Why hasn't an IST meeting been held on the child. Where are the school's intervention plans. Have they evaluated for a learning disorder or other disability and had a CSE?
