slacks and snooze - makes me ill just typing them
My parents used to say slacks!! They would also call shorts "bermudas". Quite annoying.
My dad says dungarees - it cracks me up every time.
OMG so does my dad. Its so funny.

That bothers you or you hate for some reason?
I hate the word Boobs - I hate the connotations it brings up, I hate the way it sounds...but EVERYONE says it. Drives me crazy!
I used boobies in my post..is that okay? Sorry!
Oh, it's fine - I guess it bothers me most when it's used in all seriousness to describe the female breast! Maybe I just don't like it because it's slang, but it's just become so accepted and so widespread people are going to forget that it's slang...does that make sense? I try to refer to them as breasts (all though I am partial to ta-tas )
And Rachel - what you said...I hate it even more! Especially when my MIL says it!!

Re: Is there a slang word (not dirty)
The spanish word sucia. It means dirty (as in dirty whore ). I can't stand it!!
And the word perreo or perrear or perrea or any variation of it. Also Spanish, it means to feck and is used in way too many reggaeton songs...I HATE that word...so demeaning!

I hate when people use the word "retarded"to describe something in a bad way. That is so wrong. It makes my skin crawl!
Me too. My SIL is mentally retarded, so I am especially sensitive to it.

I agree with you about the word retarded and kids also use the word "gay" as well. Words like that shouldn't be used for that purpose.

I agree, although I myself am guilty of using both words inappropriately. I also agree with dungarees.
Another one - wedge to refer to a hero, meaning chicken parm wedge - I know there a few variations to that, but DH uses wedge and I hate it and now I'm starting to also!

Re: Is there a slang word (not dirty)
I think that for me, and you probably also Farah, there are lots of words that the British use that make me laugh to no end...here is a quick list
Fanny - ladies front bottom Fanjita - ladies front bottom (ok thats from Bo Selecta, but its funny) Bum, Bumhold etc..back bottom British people use the C word...a lot, and its not even offensive...
In some places (like Sheffield) people wouild say Aye Up **** (as a term of endearment) or they might call you Cocker...or duck, or duckie
anyway, if you want to speak like a Brit...here is a good link. Top prize goes to whoever can write their next post in all British Slang...
Go have a knees up around the old joanna

Oh, Rachel - I wasn't even delving into the Brit-speak that drives me mad...here's a list:
tw@t - it's like calling someone an idiot here, even my MIL says it and I still have a hard time concealing my utter disgust every time she does!
Good on ya - Kinda means Well done or Good for you
Well Done - has anyone seen this anywhere but on a sticker that the teacher put on the top of your test in 3rd grade???
Ta - shortened version of Thank you
Hiya! - absolutely grates on my nerves - just say hello!!!
I'm sure there's more that I'm not thinking of right now

OH I could go on, I hate Hiya also, BUT I say it all the bloody time!!! I also say, as a matter of habit, upon greeting someone...You Alright??? And when I say it when I am home, people always say...I'm fine, why do ask? Also, I say things like "Do I 'Eck" or "Bloody Hell" or "Oh no its Raaaaaaaaining" (cue Oldham/Huddersfield accent here). I say Cheers and Ta when I am helped in a shop, I say Seeya when leaving a shop, to people that I will NEVER see again. I say tw@t, c*unt, p*issflaps, arsebiscuits, fook, wanker, etc when I am driving. I never say Good On Ya, because it reminds me of Neighbours (everybody needs good neighbours...) and I also find myself saying LOOK AT ME alot (ala Kath and Kim)
The things that come into your daily speak are amazing you know!!! I am a proper Northerner...just like my son, a real Mancunian!!!

I desperately try not to allow things to seep into my everday useage, but Seb thinks it's hilarious when I say wanker. I also had this habit of calling people mongy gits for a while...and then he had to tell me to stop because really it's quite offensive How did I know????
But, I've promised myself that I will never ever say "bloody 'ell" because I know Americans who have been here for 20+ years and they STILL sound stupid when they say that!
