Is this a crazy idea?

We have these 1970's railings for our interior stairs. Eventually, I want to get a wood banister but it's not in the budget right now......They are currently painted black. Do you thing it would be crazy to spray paint them bronze? If you think this is crazy please tell me b/c I'm really close to doing it....Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

ETA: The railing are metal

It's hard to tell without seeing them. The bronze might give it a 'gaudy' look. JMHO. How about painting them white? I have a white wood railing and it really brightens up the house. HTH!

Re: Is this a crazy idea?

I've only seen them painted white - but if you want to paint them bronze - go for it. It's paint - spray paint no less. What's the worst that could happen? You spend another $15 to spray white?

It may actually end up looking really nice.

I would go for the bronze.

Do you mean they're currently metal?

My mom had these in her condo - her railings were black metal and she spray painted them a metallic bronze color to better go with the decor in the room
It wasn't a really bright coppery color, more of a dark brown with flecks of subtle gold.
It actually came out really nice.

I would think white would get dirty awfully fast (just thinking of all those hands constantly touching the railing for support)

Yes, they are metal, I see I left that part out in my orig. post..... but that's exactly what I'm thinking of doing....a dark oil rubbed bronze color to match w/ the chandelier and decorations I have going up the stairs ....

Somehow I'm thinking they will look more modern if they aren't black or white....but I'm not sure

Re: Is this a crazy idea?

If it is a dark warm bronze I think it will be nice. When you first said bronze I pictured old school flashy bronze. It is just paint the worse thing that happens is you hate it and repaint it.

Re: Is this a crazy idea?

Only if it's dark bronze (like faucets ie rubbed or venitian bronzed) and it matches the rest of the house. Like you have bronze faucets, door handles and a "tuscan" feel to it.

I do not think bronze is a good color for a metal banister. Someone said white - I think that would work...

Re: Is this a crazy idea?

Depending on the furnishes in the adjacent rooms I think it would look really nice. I know if I had metal railings, I wouldn't want white. They sell some really nice bronze spray paints with faux finishes that would look great.
