Re: Is this fair?
At least they could wait until all of you were done eating before they came in. Besides the fact that you were paying a lot of money for it, they should only get the leftovers that the paying people couldn't eat.
Last place I worked had one guy who said he didn't observe holidays so he wouldn't chip in. But he'd totally scavenge food.
I've never been asked for so much money for lunch, it sounds excessive to me too. We would do a potluck thing, and only after everyone in the dept ate would people invite others to partake. We all knew if we wanted more to take a 2nd plate or pack a bowl to take home because otherwise, the other people would eat it all.
I remember this one guy from another dept who no one liked 'found' the food before anyone got to eat and started filling out a plate. One of my coworkers said loud enough for everyone to hear, "Mike, what do you think you're doing with OUR food MIKE?!" and once everyone realized what was going on, they chased him out of the kitchen.
Tough crowd but it was hilarious and every luncheon after that, we would joke about it. Embarrassment works really well.

Gosh...sounds like the Healthcare Debate.
Free Food tastes great but for those who paid its not fair (unless they really enjoy giving). =)
I was totally thinking the same thing as I was reading this post! How can you even begin to compare healthcare to party food?
I know
It is so simple:
Is it fair that some people get Free [place object/service here] but it is paid for by [place payer/social class here]?

One thing has nothing to do with the other. Sorry, way off base, IMO of course.

Re: Is this fair?
Um, instead I think you all should get tupperware and fill it up with leftovers!!
We just had an international potluck today in our lab and we are all taking the leftovers home among ourselves (some people are taking my food, I'm taking theirs). We're not just offering it to anyone. Now if someone comes to the lab we'll offer them some, but the main bulk of the leftovers to go us, since we ut the work and money in.
