Is this legal re: bank change of payment address?
This is now the 2nd time this has happened in the last 2 months.
First, I made a payment on my Chase CC. A week later I keep getting a call that a payment hasn't been made meanwhile my bank account, which is where I automatically pay my bills from, shows the payment was made. I call them and they told me they changed their payment address. I asked if they sent out a notification, they said no, the change of address was on the statement.
Second time was with my Citibank HELOC. I made a payment 2 weeks ago. Again my Chase account shows the payment was made. I kept getting calls that my payment has not been received. I called them today and they said "oh were you aware we changed our payment address?" I said no. Did you send out a letter? They said no it was shown on the statement. Great...but I pay my bills automatically so I dont look at my statements.
I have had these accounts for years and all of a sudden they are changing their payment addresses??? And then they dont even make it clear for the customer...almost like a trick Now I know in the future I am going to have to make sure to check not only the due date which they constantly change, but now the payment address. They are trying anything to get a little extra money these days.

Re: Is this legal re: bank change of payment address?
I don't think it's illegal since it is the debtor's responsibility to make sure the payment is sent to the proper addres. But I think it's kind of crappy to change the address after so many years without putting a notation on the bill to "note new address."
I pay bills electronically also but I go to the vendor site (verizon, amex, etc) to initiate the payment on their side. At one point I was going to switch it to send the payments from my bank but I am afraid of something like this happening.

its absolutely legal.....110%. I can see how is s*cks, but it is the person making the payments responsibility to check the statements.

That happened to me with another bank. It's sneaky imho but the bank rep said that it's my responsibility to check the statement each month.

im confused though..if you're paying online, then what does the payment address have to do with it?
or is this something the banks need to know when they electronically withdraw your funds.
I dont schedule automatic payments anymore after fidelity changed the date on one statement and i wasnt aware..holy moly..they hit me with fees that were out of this world.
Sorry...they all suck!

I think if you use auto banking (not where you go on and click it to be paid) the banks use a 3rd party vendor. The vendor draws from your account, cuts a check and sends it out. So if you do not notify your bank of a change of address for payment, they will send it to whatever is on file.

instead of paying via your bank (chase) pay directly at the company/banks website. this will avoid sending funds from chase as Citibank would just debt your account. yes, its an extra account to go into but i rather it that way.
I use my bank (chase) to pay odd and ends stuff that don't have there own website (dr's office, daycare, etc..)

Exactly! I know it is my responsibility but you would think they would put a note *please note address change* or something.
I just set up to automatically debit each month from my bank account...one less thing to worry about and that way I know I am never late. But now I am going to have to always double check.
