Is this normal?
Is it ridiculous that mgmt would require employees to stay later than their normal business hrs, without assigning extra work?
DH just called to say his mgr wants him to stay late (on a reg basis) but assigned no additional work, each employee is now responsible to generate more work for themselves. They typically finish their work within regular business hrs and stay late when needed, but now his senior mgr thinks they should stay late just for appearances.

Re: Is this normal?
I think there are a lot of people out there with that mentality. My guess is that your dh's boss is trying to make himself look good to his/her boss which isn't fair to your dh. As long as he is meeting deadlines there should be no reason for him to stay late regularly. There is also the theory that staying late regularly does NOT help your appearance/make you look good because what you're essentially saying is that you're not capable of getting your work done in the time the company gives you to do it (not you per say but you get the idea)

Re: Is this normal?
My DH works for a hedge fund, and their hours are 8am-6pm. A lot of times DH has to stay later if investors are there, just for appearances.

Re: Is this normal?
I think this is ridiculous and I would personally be looking for another job at that point.
Disclaimer: I fully realize that a lot of employers are growing balls these days regarding what they ask of employees because of the state of the economy. I still don't think he has to put up with it though if something better is out there.
P.S. Are they paying him for staying later?

No additional pay, but he's salaried so not sure if that makes a diff.
Dont get me wrong, if there was work that needed to be done which required working later then I total would agree with mgmt. Its the fact that they want him to waste his own personal time just to make it appear to corporate that the dept is needed and its not like they said it would be a month or two, they expect him to continue staying late for the forseeable future.
